Screening is an important step in the early detection and prevention of cervical cancer—but many patients face barriers that make getting screened difficult or even impossible. ACOG is working to make this process more accessible.
Today, we released updated guidance that now includes the option for patients to collect their own samples for high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) testing. Now, patients who are 30 to 65 years old and of average risk may be eligible to collect their own samples for hrHPV primary screening every three years.
While having your clinician collect samples is still the preferred option, self-collection can offer flexibility and increased accessibility under the right circumstances. This guidance endorses the updated recommendations from the HRSA Women’s Preventative Services Initiative and we hope it will help reduce the barriers for cervical cancer screening for patients across the country. Talk with your ob-gyn about self-collected screening options to help decide if they’re right for you.
