CORD ACCIDENT🥺
The baby’s mother had been experiencing a normal pregnancy with no prior indications of any complications. Me, as the attending physician, is completely clueless as well. All her prenatal checkups were unremarkable. Her most recent ultrasound showed a baby in excellent condition (BPS 8/8). Because the mother found it ‘weird’ that she was nearing her due date but she was not into labor yet, she opted to undergo C-section even if I was coaxing her to wait a little longer. Lo and behold, when our team opened her up, we were SHOCKED to see the baby with a total of 5 cord coils in her neck with one loop so tight compressing the baby’s airway. Had the baby been delivered through the birth canal, the baby’s life may be tragically lost due to this umbilical cord entanglement. The experience left me shaken, I had goose bumps all over…. I had two prior cord accident babies i lost and this one could have been the 3rd in my whole career if …. The timely surgical termination of the pregnancy saved the baby and I am so grateful that my patient insisted to undergo C-section…
Umbilical cord entanglement is a serious pregnancy complication that can have life-threatening consequences for the unborn baby, and while it is rare, it is a risk that expectant mothers should be aware of. Unfortunately such condition is not clearly seen in a 2D ultrasound which most diagnostic labs use, a 4D ultra and/or a Doppler flow study are the gold standards in the diagnosis of this condition .... Anyway the healthy baby is now in the arms of her beautiful mom❤️❤️❤️
