WHAT IS DIGITAL EYE STRAIN?

Digital eye strain is a group of eye and vision-related problems that results from prolonged usage of computers, tablets, e-readers, and cell phones. Common symptoms include dry eyes, blurry vision, tearing or watery eyes, and headache. One common cause is when you blink less when you stare at your devices. People normally blink around 15 times per minute, but this “blink rate” can be cut in half when staring at screens.

Talk to your ophthalmologist for more information.

HOW IS DIGITAL EYE STRAIN TREATED?

Treatment for eyestrain generally consists of making changes in your daily habits or environment. Some people may need treatment for an underlying eye condition. For some people, an ophthalmologist may prescribe glasses for specific activities, such as for computer use or for reading, to help reduce eyestrain. Your eye ophthalmologist may suggest that you take regular eye breaks to help your eyes focus at different distances.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

⚠️ have family members with glaucoma
⚠️ have high eye pressure
⚠️ are farsighted or nearsighted
⚠️ have had an eye injury
⚠️ use long-term steroid medications
⚠️ have corneas that are thin in the center

GLAUCOMA: WHAT’S THE MAIN CAUSE?

Glaucoma is caused mainly by abnormally high pressure in the eye that damages the optic nerve. The eye constantly produces a small amount of a clear liquid called aqueous humor that nourishes the eye and keeps it inflated. An equal amount flows out through an area called the drainage angle thereby maintaining balance. Imbalances in the creation and drainage of aqueous humor can increase eye pressure.

HOW DOES ADULT STRABISMUS AFFECT VISION?

With normal vision, both eyes aim at the same spot. The brain combines the two images from our eyes into a single, three-dimensional (3-D) image. This is how we can tell how near or far something is from us (depth perception). When one eye is out of alignment, two different pictures are sent to the brain, often resulting in double vision.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information on adult strabismus.

WHEN TO HAVE AN EYE EXAM

For adults whose eyes are healthy and vision is good, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) recommends a complete eye exam done by an ophthalmologist once in their 20s and twice in their 30s. The AAO recommends that adults get a complete eye examination at age 40 when early signs of disease or changes in vision may appear. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment of eye diseases are vital.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

BLUE LIGHT GLASSES ARE UNNECESSARY

The small amount of blue light coming from the screen of digital devices has never been shown to cause any harm to eyes. Sleep can be improved without special eyeglasses — you simply need to reduce evening screen time and set devices to night mode. Digital eye strain is not caused by blue light; rather, its symptoms are linked to how we use our digital devices.

Consult a pediatric ophthalmologist for more information on blue light.

NO EVIDENCE YET THAT BLUE LIGHT DAMAGES EYES

Laboratory studies show that blue light can damage cells in a dish and animals’ eyes. However, these experiments did not mimic the natural conditions of blue light exposure to live human eyes and use blue light from computer screens. So far, the evidence shows no meaningful link between blue light and damage to human retinas or age-related macular degeneration.

Consult a pediatric ophthalmologist for more information on blue light.

HOW TO REDUCE DIGITAL EYE STRAIN

Digital eye strain symptoms include dry eyes, blurry vision tearing or watery eyes, and headache. To reduce eye strain, look away from your screen every 20 minutes and look at an object 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Use artificial tears to lubricate your eyes when they feel dry. Sit about 25 inches or at arm’s length from your screen and adjust its height so you’re looking slightly downward at it. Adjust the brightness and contrast of your screen and dim the lighting near your screen. If you wear contacts, wear eyeglasses instead.

Consult a pediatric ophthalmologist for more information.

BLUE LIGHT CAN AFFECT SLEEP

Excessive exposure to blue light from screens in the evening can disrupt our body’s natural sleep cycle, known as the circadian rhythm. Light slows the production of the sleep hormone, melatonin, in our body. For more restful sleep, set devices to night or dark mode in the evening and avoid using screens one to two hours before going to sleep.

Consult a pediatric ophthalmologist for more information on how blue light affects sleep.

WHAT IS MACULAR DEGENERATION?

Macular degeneration occurs when a part of the retina called the macula is damaged. Its exact cause is not known, but research indicates it may be affected by a combination of heredity, i.e., you are at higher risk if someone in your family has the condition, and environmental factors including smoking, obesity, and a high-fat diet, among others.

Talk to your eye doctor for more information on macular degeneration.
