Most children are ready to brush their own teeth between age 6 and 9, but, 𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿. Rather, there are certain skills that children need to develop in order to know that they’re ready to brush on their own:
1️⃣ 𝗗𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆: Dexterity can be checked if your child can already tie his/her own shoelaces. When your child is dextrous enough to tie their own laces, they're probably ready brush independently.
2️⃣ 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Hygiene habits (i.e. hand washing, combing the hair) takes time to develop in children. Once you can trust your child on doing these hygiene habits on their own, they are ready to brush solo.
3️⃣ 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: Spitting is an important step during toothbrushing. Until they have mastered spitting the toothpaste into the sink by themselves, they still need adult supervision.
