Why This Matters for Every Filipina (and Every Family)

The D-HPV Study is a wake-up call. For years, HPV vaccination and cervical cancer prevention programs in the Philippines β€” and in many other countries β€” have focused primarily on HPV 16 and 18, the two types historically responsible for the largest share of cervical cancers worldwide. That focus made sense when those were the dominant threats and when earlier vaccines could only protect against a limited number of strains.

But data has changed. And when data changes, strategy must follow.

Key Shift: HPV 52 Is Now Leading in the Study Communities

The study shows HPV 52 emerging as the most common high-risk genotype among women sampled in Tondo (urban) and Naic (rural). This matters because:

Many existing public-sector vaccination programs still rely on quadrivalent (4-strain) HPV vaccines (commonly called Gardasil 4), which protect against HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18.

HPV 52 is not included in the quadrivalent vaccine.

Some limited cross-protection against non-vaccine oncogenic types (including 31, 33, 45, sometimes 52) has been observed in certain studies with earlier vaccines β€” but the protection is partial, inconsistent, and not reliable at the population level.

If HPV 52 is driving infection in your community, then relying on a vaccine that does not directly cover it is like wearing a raincoat with holes and hoping the weather stays dry.

Enter Gardasil 9: Direct Coverage of HPV 52 (and More)

Gardasil 9 (the nonavalent HPV vaccine) expands protection beyond 16 and 18 to include 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58, in addition to the low-risk 6 and 11 that cause most ge***al warts.

Screen to Save: Malolos Unites to End Cervical Cancer

On April 24, 2025, the City of Malolos City Health Office launched a cervical cancer prevention training titled β€œSee Screen Save Lives!”, led by Dr. Frederick Villano and supported by Mayor Christian Natividad.

Fourteen midwives and nurses from seven rural health units received hands-on training in Pap smear and VIA screening, guided by Dr. Jesus Randy β€œBogs” Rivera of End Cervical Cancer Philippines Organization, Inc.

The event emphasized the city’s commitment to eliminating cervical cancer, aligning with Provincial Health Officer Dr. Edwin Tecson’s call to screen over 38,000 women in Bulacan.

Vital support came from civic partners like the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which donated screening equipment, and We Bless We Care Foundation.

This collaborative effort showcased the power of grassroots healthcare in preventing cervical cancerβ€”proving that through education, training, and compassion, we can β€œScreen to Save.”

As we look to the future, let this be our shared message: Screen to Save.

πŸŽ‰ Kudos to HEPU Lungsod ng Sto. Tomas, Batangas β€” A Truly Remarkable Milestone! πŸ’œ
A heartfelt congratulations to the Health Education and Promotions Unit (HEPU) of the City of Santo Tomas, Batangas, led by the inspiring Dr. Arnielyn Marasigan-Aguirre and the ever-committed Ms. Joy Ferreras! πŸ™Œ
Over the course of 21 cervical cancer screening days, a total of 571 women have been screened β€” averaging 27 women per day! πŸ“ˆβœ¨ This incredible achievement is a reflection of relentless dedication, passion, and an unwavering commitment to women's health.
A special shoutout goes to ALL BARANGAY LEADERS, MEEMBERS who went above and beyond, helping pool more than 30 women per screening day. Your exceptional leadership and genuine compassion are saving lives and setting a powerful example for others. Your efforts show what is possible when communities come together with a shared purpose β€” protecting the health and future of women. πŸ’œ
Cervical cancer screening saves lives β€” early detection prevents unnecessary suffering and death. Every screening day brings us closer to the Department of Health’s (DOH) vision under the Cervical Cancer Elimination Campaign, aiming to screen at least 5% of the total at-risk population this year β€” that’s several thousands of women that need to be reached!
It’s UNFORTUNATE, however, that SOME barangays could only GATHER 7 to 8 women per screening day. πŸ˜” To those communities, we HOPE you REALIZE the OPPORTUNITY being MISSED. In Manila, this life-saving procedure can cost up to β‚±2,500 β€” yet here, it’s being made ACCESSIBLE FOR FREE. Screening could spare lives β€” sometimes all it takes is spreading information and persuading women to seize the chance to get checked.
Mabuhay, HEPU! Mabuhay to all leaders and champions who recognize the urgency and importance of this mission! Together, let’s continue moving closer to a future free of cervical cancer. πŸ’ͺπŸ’œ
