Movement Matters Therapy Center joins the nation in celebrating persons, most especially children with disabilities (CWDs). This year, we likewise advocate for the genuine inclusion of our CWDs in their schools & in their communities. They need more public schools with SpEd/ SNED programs as well as free therapy services in government-managed therapy centers.

We urge the government to provide more reliable & consistent service & financial assistance to all PWDs & their families, keeping in mind that most of their disabilities require lifetime support.

UN-fun facts about autistic elopement:

Studies show that roughly 50% of autistic children attempt to elope at least once after the age of 4.

Elopement is often an attempt to escape sensory overwhelm, avoid anxiety, seek something desired, or cope with distress.

Elopement is linked to a high risk of injury or death, particularly from drowning or traffic accidents.

Many children have patterns related to their elopement behavior. Understanding why they’re trying to leave can help prevent it.

While safety tools like door alarms and tracking devices can help, the best prevention comes from skill building; sensory accommodations, communication supports, emotional regulation strategies, and consistent routines.

Blaming parents or teachers when elopement happens is harmful. What we need is education, resources, and compassion.

Not all trending treatment options are as effective as they describe in publicity materials. Some treatments may not even be applicable to your child's specific condition. Long-term side effects should also be considered. Do your own research first from credible sources & not from social media posts or other parents' testimonials. Most importantly, consult professionals, starting with your child's developmental pediatrician & therapists because they know your child's diagnosis & current skills better than strangers (even if they are popular "influencers" or celebrities) who give recommendations & general advise on the internet. Please be guided accordingly.
