In continuing with our celebration of the World PT Day, we are recognizing our very own pediatric physical therapists & their contributions to the development of children with physical disabilities. Next up on our Featured Therapist for today is MMTC Executive Director Abbie Flores-Mensenares who is a PT by profession.
TEACHER ABBIE has been treating children with Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Seizure Disorder, Spina Bifida & other neurological disorders for the past 26 yrs. She worked in various therapy centers before putting up Movement Matters Therapy Center in 2007. In 2014, she trained & became a Certified Bobath Pediatric Therapist.
As a UP graduate, she began her professional career caring for & treating patients from lower income families, at times getting paid in produce like fruits & vegetables in lieu of cash. Fast forward to the present, Teacher Abbie continues to serve less privileged children through her work as the head of the Philippine Physical Therapy Association Pediatrics Special Interest Group (PPTA PEDIA SIG). πŸ’™πŸ€πŸ©΅

As part of our World PT Day Celebration, we will be featuring our very own pediatric physiotherapists in Movement Matters. We start off by presenting the youngest in our PT Section, Athena Andrea Marcelo or better known as TEACHER ATHENS to her kids.
Teacher Athens is a graduate of BS Physical Therapy from the University of the Philippines in Manila. She passed the PT Licensure Exam & set off to begin her professional career in 2020 right in the middle of the pandemic. But this did not deter her from pursuing her passion to help people with disabilities & so she started conducting Teletherapy sessions, which she continues to offer until now.
In just 4 years of professional practice, Teacher Athens has become an excellent pediatric PT, but her genuine fondness & love for kids makes her one of the most requested therapists in MMTC. πŸ’™πŸ€πŸ©΅

Some centers may advertise that they target OT, speech, and SpEd goals in one session, but this should alarm you, not attract you. πŸ™ˆ

There is no such thing as 3-in-1 therapy sessions because unlike coffee β˜•οΈ , children’s neurodivergent minds are complex that it’s impossible to target all of these aspects by just one person.

Don’t let other people take advantage of the fact that there are limited professionals in your area. Remember:
1. Therapists and teachers should be graduates of 4- to 5- year courses and therapists should be PRC licensed. Ask your service providers if they have these.
2. An OT is different from a speech pathologist, which is also different from a SpEd tutor. They target different areas to improve the quality of life of your kids.
3. There is really a long wait list, so once you get a slot, make sure that you take that opportunity and make the most of it.
4. Don’t be afraid to ask your therapist questions about your child. If you have legitimate therapists, you should feel empowered to ask them questions, and feel confident that they will answer you accordingly. β™₯️
