UP Tomo-Kai U.P. The organization also has trips together with the Japanese, touring them around various parts of the Philippines. Tomo-Kai to further our undertakings.

The official page of the UP Philippines-Japan Friendship Club or more popularly known as UP Tomo-Kai!

๐Ÿ“จ For partnerships and sponsorships:
uptomokai.linkages@gmail.com TOMO-KAI is an organization that started from the pursuit of seven students now known as the 7 SAMURAI (Deric, Eric, Alf, Kit, Gay, Flor, and Daniel) who were interested in the Japanese culture and language. With this came their de

sire to promote their newfound fascination to the Filipinos and also serve as instrument in fostering mutual relations and understanding between Filipinos and Japanese. For many years, we have proven our worth as a vital instrument in fostering and strengthening the better relations and understanding between Filipinos and Japanese. The organizations annual exhibits of various Filipino and Japanese arts, usually held during its anniversary, have been one of the most admired presentations in the university. The organization also conducts series of learning seminars where the members and the Japanese interact and eventually gain better awareness of each others culture. When Japanese students from Nihon Fukushi University, Takushoku University, Meiji Gakuin Daigaku, Soka Daigaku, and other Japanese schools visit, the organization makes it a point to participate with them in and entertain them through fun-filled activities and gatherings, which will make their stays memorable. Tomo-Kai also keeps in touch with U.P.s very own Japanese exchange students residing for a longer time (usually for a year) in U.P.s International Center. It is the dream of the past and present members of U.P. Moreover, these are not only concentrated on culture itself but also on the meaning of friendship. The various activities help foster amiable relations between Filipinos and Japanese, also between fellow Filipinos, specifically through Out-Reach Programs that we hold at least once a year.

If you try and look for it, it isnโ€™t hard to spot instances of Filipino people taking a liking to the aesthetic of the Japanese writing systems: From kanji tattoos, to nihongo versions of UP merch, even ใฆใƒญใƒใƒใƒขใƒข. However, did you know that the Philippines has a few interesting scripts of its own? Although most arenโ€™t used in common communication nowadays, the Filipino people have utilized all sorts of writing systems all the way from the pre-colonial era up until this very day. The most well known of these scripts is one you might have seen in cafes, in historical buildings, even in the sablays that graduating students wear: This is the writing system called Baybayin.

Rooting from the word Baybay meaning โ€œto spell,โ€ Baybayin is a writing system that has been around even before the Spaniards arrived to our shores. Descending from the ancient scripts of India (Morrow, 2002), Baybayin resembles its Indian relatives through certain traits like the fact that each unique character โ€” in its base form โ€” denotes a consonant followed by the vowel /a/. Each character reads /ba/, /na/, /nga/, and so on. Any modification to the vowel is done by adding a special extra mark โ€” also called a diacritic โ€” to the base character. Yes, this means that, like Japanese kana, each character in Baybayin represents a syllable, not a lone sound. Unlike kana, though, it doesnโ€™t have unique characters for every single vowel-consonant combination. This is why it is considered an alpha-syllabary, not as alphabetic as Englishโ€™s latin script, not as syllabary as Japaneseโ€™s kana.

But why am I telling you all this when you can just start using it for yourself! Check below to see a list of the baybayin characters and try to write something interesting with it! And if you enjoyed looking into Baybayin, why not check out the dozens of other Filipino writing systems: Kulitan, Hanunoโ€™o, Tagbanwa, Jawi โ€” each harboring a piece of the cultures that used these symbols, something much bigger and more important than just a mere aesthetic.

If youโ€™ve ever had the privilege of visiting Japan, you may have realized that thereโ€™s actually a noticeable lack of any trash cans available in public spaces. Regrettably, this was originally done as a precautionary measure after a series of terrorist attacks in 1995; where toxic gas was placed in public spacesโ€”including trash cans in heavily populated areas such as subway stationsโ€”and resulted in more than a thousand people injured.

The incident stuck with the Japanese public, and so trash cans were systematically removed, yet despite this, the majority of spaces remained clean. This is because of the culture in Japan in itself; in this case being the general sense of responsibility and awareness that public spaces are just that: public.

Instead of littering, people instead tend to carry their trash on them for as long as need be until they find a trash can somewhere else, because they are taught at a young age to maintain this cleanliness, with there even being an anti-litter superhero mascot called Mangetsu Man that patrols Tokyo; ultimately resulting in Japanโ€™s ever-accurate reputation for cleanliness and order.
