Francis may have protected the birds and animals of the garden, but the actual patron saint of gardening is an Irish monk named St. Fiacre, whose feast is celebrated in Ireland and France on September 1. Saint Fiacre is the patron of gardeners, hosiery, taxi drivers, florists, and box makers. He lived most of his life as a hermit in a cave and sprouted a garden around the cave by merely dragging a shovel on the ground which he desired to have a garden. Saint Fiacre is also well-known for his abilities to heal by simply laying his hands.
