DEAR READERS,

Some of my patients don’t quite believe me when I tell them my age. I play tennis, swim, do sprints, climb mountains … and I have plenty of energy to fly around the world speaking and doing research. They look at me and say, “Yeah… but you have good genes.”
In a way, they’re right.
It’s not that I was born with “good genes,” though. I take good care of my genes… and it’s paying off. I can run circles around most men my age. Fortunately for my patients – and for you – I’m not doing anything you can’t.
I’ve been writing to you about telomeres for several years now. These little “caps” on the ends of your chromosomes protect your genetic material during cell division. The longer your telomeres, the longer your cells live. They’re an anti-aging dynamo on the cellular level.
I’ve written to you about a number of nutrients linked to longer telomeres, too. Nutrients like Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin C. People with higher intakes tend to have longer telomeres. Exercise lengthens telomeres, too, as long as it’s shorter, more intense exertion and not endurance exercise.
But there’s something else you should know about… because it’s key to fighting the effects of age.
If you remember, telomerase is the enzyme that helps rebuild telomeres. Activating it can reverse the aging of your cells by as much as 20 years.1
Today I want to tell you about a nutrient that activates telomerase… it carries so many health benefits that if it were a drug, they would give it the Nobel Prize.
It’s vitamin D.
A landmark study from a university in Nebraska found that vitamin D has the potential to lower the risk of all cancers in women by 77 percent.2
Maybe that’s because of the anti-aging effect vitamin D has on the immune system and telomere length. In a study conducted at King’s College in London, researchers looked at telomere length in a large group of women. Women with high vitamin D levels had much younger cells.
Their telomeres showed 5 years less aging than women with the lowest vitamin D levels.
A 2013 Harvard study had similar results. Among 1,424 nurses tested, those with the highest vitamin D levels also had the longest telomeres.3
Why do people who have high levels of vitamin D have longer telomeres?
Because vitamin D activates telomerase. One study divided people into two groups and measured their vitamin D levels. Then researchers randomly assigned the people to either get a placebo or the equivalent of 2,000 IU of vitamin D a day.
After only 4 months, those taking vitamin D had their telomerase activity skyrocket by 19.2%.4 Those taking a dummy pill had no change in telomerase activity.
Exposure to the sun is the best way to get plenty of vitamin D. A good rule of thumb is to get outside when your shadow is shorter than you are. Typically that’s between 10 am and 2 pm. But most people don’t get enough sun on a daily basis. And if you live north of Atlanta, the winter sun isn’t strong enough to trigger much vitamin D production.
Oily fish is the best food source of vitamin D. Taking cod liver oil daily should give you plenty. But if you don’t like fish, look for the D3 form of vitamin D. It’s the bioactive form.
I usually recommend 5,000 IU every day, which is much more than a standard multi-vitamin. Most only give you 400 IU which won’t activate telomerase.

Stress, special breathing and African herbs:

Dear Readers,

For many of my patients – and people I talk to all over the world when I speak – the stress of modern life is piling up. There seems to be so much pressure on us even when we do things that are supposed to be fun, like leisure sports. And the cost of living is skyrocketing. It’s heaping debt, insecurity and stress on so many of us.

That kind of stress can have very negative health consequences. And that’s why I’m writing to you today. I want to give you two tips that will help you ease the stress and bring your body back into balance.

A study I read in Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that people who recently lost their jobs had a 200% increase in risk for heart attack and stroke.1

This makes perfect sense. When you experience stress, your body thinks it’s coming from something that poses a threat to your survival. So you release the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol.

The problem is that our bodies are designed for stresses that pass quickly. Then we release the hormone DHEA which helps us recover.

But what happens when the stress goes on and on? With financial stress, the anxiety, worry, and stress are constant and chronic. And unless you do something about it, it doesn’t go away.

That means you need something to help deal with the stress first, so you can cope with the financial stresses with a clear mind.

Your mind plays an important part in this. When I was a young man struggling to make money for food for my family, I felt like I was doing OK. I didn’t consider my work stressful, even though it was hard. And that’s the thing that protected me – my mental attitude.

Did you know that studies show that if you perceive yourself as doing ok, then your health will be better than if you think you’re doing poorly? And that’s true regardless of your actual financial situation.2

Studies also show that what you choose to do about it can also help you live longer and stay disease-free.3

Cadence Relaxing Breathing

The first thing I want to help you do about helping your body deal with stressful times is to help you breathe. Every ancient health system has a breathing component because the ancients knew breathing is rejuvenating. I do breathing exercises every morning.

They’re very effective. Modern science has proven the ancients right. Did you know that these kinds of exercises can help you become as good as elite Special Forces soldiers and Olympic athletes in your ability to handle stressful situations?4 Powerful stuff.

To start, simply find a comfortable spot, and control your breathing. Bring it back to deep breaths, in and out.

First: Empty your lungs until there’s no more air. Exhale completely. Force out every drop.

Second: Inhale deeply for at least a slow count of 4. Fill your lungs until you can’t inhale any more.

Third: Hold your breath for at least a slow count of 7. Anticipating the exhalation like this creates a calming and rebalancing effect.

Fourth: Now exhale for at least a slow count of 8. Empty your lungs fully, then push out any remaining air. This is the part we usually forget, but it’s the most crucial. As you exhale, you will feel yourself relax.

By adding this exercise to your daily routine you’ll not only boost you’ll be able to effectively deal with problems like anxiety and isolation that cause excessive stress.

African Herbal Relaxing Adaptogen

The second way I want to help you is to tell you about a unique adaptogen – an herb that helps your body adjust to stress.

It’s called kanna. It’s not very well-known outside of Africa. But it’s been used for hundreds of years by the hunter-gatherer peoples to elevate mood and reduce stress. The traditional healers I’ve met in Uganda tell me they use it to treat anxiety, too.

It has a component called mesembrine, which studies show may help lessen the effects of stress. It’s a small plant that was usually chewed. But now you can get it as an extract powder. There are a few good places to get it online, and at local health food stores.

You might see the extract under the trade name “Zembrin,” which is the extracted and standardized form from South Africa. You can also find it blended with another South African tea leaf, rooibos.

To use kanna powder, try adding about 1/3 of a teaspoon into a cup of tea.

Dear Piorello,

Most people think that cancer is an epidemic, it’s out of control and there’s nothing we can do.

But the truth is that although cancer is more likely than ever, it’s also more treatable than ever. We’re making a lot of progress and many cancers are no longer a death sentence.

What gives me even more hope is that although cancer incidence has gone up, it illustrates cancer’s fatal flaw. Cancer is a product of how far we’ve strayed from our natural environment.

That truth reveals an even bigger truth: It means we already have the cure. But these cures aren’t chemotherapy drugs. They’re natural compounds that kill off cancer cells.

Let me give you an example. I just finished writing my latest book Healing Herbs from Paradise. Almost every plant and herb I’ve found in Bali has some cancer-killing property.

Take guavas. They’re delicious, and they were in season, so I ate one every morning the last time I was in Bali. The fruit is rich in fiber, vitamins A and C, folic acid, potassium, copper and manganese. Those alone are enough of a benefit, because they power up your immune system.

However, it’s the leaves that hold the real surprise. They’re anti-cancer.

Guava extracts suppress tumor growth, and in animal studies can even suppress leukemia.

Guava is especially good for men because it can interrupt the pathways that cause prostate cells to become cancerous. Plus, it can cause already cancerous cells to die leaving healthy cells alone.1

Scientists are studying 60 compounds from guava for their possible anti-cancer effects. One of the compounds that could be a big reason for guava’s anticancer power is that the leaves are a rich source of a little-known flavonoid called morin.

Research shows morin can block the growth of tumor cells,2 and kill off colon3 and breast cancer cells.4

Guava leaves also contain potent antioxidant power, which helps prevent cancer in the first place.5

That’s something valuable, and real. You can use weapons from our natural environment to fight the diseases cause by moving so far from our natural environment.

You may have to search a bit for guava leaves because they’re not as plentiful as the fruit. You can find sellers on places like Alibaba.com or Localharvest.org. You’re more likely to find see fresh leaves at a Mexican specialty store. But there are some health food stores that carry dried leaves.

That’s okay by me. Dried leaves make more potent teas and decoctions anyway. Fresh leaves contain more water so you need to almost double the amount to dried leaf infusions.

To make a guava leaf tea here’s what my herbalist friend Ni Wayan Lelir recommends:

Step 1: Take 1 cup water and 1-oz of dried guava leaf.

Step 2: Place the water into a stainless steel or enamel pot; do not use aluminum.

Step 3: Cut or crush the herb or root and add it to the water in the pot.

Step 4: Turn on the heat to medium. Simmer your decoction with the lid off until the volume of water is reduced by one-quarter (so, three-quarters of a pint remains).

Step 5: Cool and strain. Store in the fridge for no more than 72 hours.

Then take in divided doses according to use. Swish three times a day.

Guava leaves are just one of the little-known ways you can guard your body against the onslaught of cancer from the modern world. Problem is, they’re natural, so no one has reported on them yet. You won’t hear a peep about this from mainstream medicine because these natural cancer treatments make sense, but make no profit.

Some are even very common natural compounds that destroy cancer efficiently, yet unlike chemotherapy, don’t hurt any healthy cells.
