Sa paggunita ng ika-84 na anibersaryo ng Araw ng Kagitingan, pinararangalan natin ang tapang at sakripisyo ng ating mga sundalong bayani. Pakinggan natin muli ang tadyak ng kanilang paa, alalahanin ang kanilang paghihirap, at ipagdiwang ang katapangan ng mga sundalong Pilipino at Amerikano na lumaban sa Ikalawang Digmaang Pandaigdig.

Isang daan at apatnapung kilometro. Pitumpu’t anim na libong sundalo. Dalawampung libong buhay na kinitil. Mga bilang na hindi lamang nakaukit sa pahina ng kasaysayan ng Pilipinas, kundi sumasalamin sa tindi ng mga sakripisyo at hirap na dinanas ng ating mga sundalo noong Ikalawang Digmaang Pandaigdig.

Noong ika-9 ng Abril taong 1942, ang mga sundalong Pilipino, Amerikano, at Tsinoy ay sapilitang pinagmartsa mula sa Mariveles, Bataan patungong San Fernando, Pampanga. Pagdating doon, isiniksik sila sa mga tren at muling pinilit na maglakad ng humigit-kumulang pitong milya patungong Camp O'Donnell sa Capas, Tarlac. Ang matindi at sapilitang paglalakad na ito ay tinaguriang “Bataan Death March”.

Ang “Bataan Death March” ay nagsimula kasunod ng tatlong buwang Battle of Bataan, kung saan isinuko ng pinuno ng puwersa ng Luzon sa Bataan na si Commander Edward P. King Jr. ang mahigit pitumpu’t anim na libong sundalo sa mga Hapon. Marami ang namatay bago pa man sila makarating sa mga kampong piitan, dala ng gutom, pagod, at karahasan. Mula sa pitumpu’t anim na libo, humigit-kumulang limampu’t apat na libo lamang ang nakaligtas.

Noong 1945, muling nasakop ng puwersang Pilipino-Amerikano ang bansa at napalaya ang mga sundalong bihag na nagdusa sa Camp O'Donnell. Marami sa kanila ang nagkaroon ng pangmatagalang epekto mula sa malupit na kondisyon ng mga kampo at sa karahasan ng mga Hapon.

Bakit nga ba natin ito tinatawag na Araw ng Kagitingan kung ito’y tila isang pagkatalo sa pahina ng ating kasaysayan?

Ipinagdiriwang natin ito upang ibigay ang nararapat na pagkilala sa mga sundalong tumindig, marangal na nakipaglaban at nagpakita na hindi kayang lupigin ng dahas ang kanilang prinsipyo. Ang naging pagkatalo natin ay hindi sumimbolo ng katapusan, kundi naging simula ito ng mas matatag at matibay na diwa ng mga Pilipino na lumaban.

Sa paglipas ng mga dekada, unti-unting nabawasan ang mga buhay na saksi sa kasaysayang ito. Isa sa mga huling nakapanayam na nabubuhay na saksi ay si Colonel Vicente F. Alhambra Sr., isang Pilipinong sundalo. Ayon kay Alhambra, ang kanyang naging agimat sa kabila ng lahat ay ang kanyang matibay na pananampalataya. Aniya, “God was on my side” sa buong panahong iyon, kung saan marami sa kanyang mga kasamahan ang nasawi dulot ng matinding pagod o kaya nama’y pinaslang sa pamamagitan ng pamamaril at pananaksak ng bayoneta ng mga sundalong Hapon. Nalampasan niya ang banta ng kamatayan sa panahong iyon at nagpatuloy pa sa pakikipaglaban sa mga sumunod na digmaan katulad ng “Korean War”. Ito ay isang patunay ng kanyang walang kapantay na katapangan at wagas na pagmamahal sa bayan.

Sa araw na ito, nawa'y pakinggan natin ang mga yapak ng paa ng mga sundalong nag-alay ng kanilang buhay. Ating gunitain ang mga sundalong Pilipino at Amerikanong nanindigan laban sa puwersa ng Hapon noong Ikalawang Digmaang Pandaigdig. Ang kagitingan na ipinamalas ng ating mga sundalo sa kadiliman ng Bataan ang siyang nagbibigay liwanag sa puso’t isipan ng bawat gerilya sa buong kapuluan.
