An Angiogram is a medical test that uses X-rays to take pictures of your blood vessels, like arteries or veins, to check for blockages, narrowing’s, or other problems.
Imagine your blood vessels as highways for blood. Sometimes, these "highways" can get clogged (like a traffic jam) due to plaque (fatty deposits) or other issues. An angiogram is like a live GPS scan that lets doctors see inside these blood vessels to find where the problem is.
How It’s Done:
1. A thin tube (catheter) is inserted into a blood vessel (usually in the groin or wrist).
2. Special dye (contrast) is injected, making the blood vessels show up clearly on X-rays.
3. X-ray images are taken to see if there are any blockages or abnormalities.
Why It’s Done:
- Check for heart artery blockages (coronary angiogram).
- Find aneurysms (bulges in blood vessels).
- Look for clots or narrowed vessels in the legs, brain, or other organs.
Is It Safe?
- Generally low risk, but possible side effects include bruising, bleeding, or (rarely) allergic reactions to the dye.
- It’s a common procedure and helps doctors decide the best treatment (like stents or surgery).
