Motivation is not the precursor to taking action. It is the reward for taking action.

Every time that you invest your energy towards something that matters to you, it becomes more interesting and more important to you, and therefore, easier to keep pursuing it. But in order to get those rewards, you have to take the first step.

Here’s a simple tool you can use to help you feel motivated. Set a timer for ten minutes and say to yourself, “For the next ten minutes, I’m going to do something (anything!) that moves me a tiny bit closer towards my goals.” When the timer goes off, take a pulse check: would you like to keep going? If so, great! Persist. If not, great! You’re ten minutes closer to your goal—and coming back tomorrow to do it again just got a lot more exciting.
