Mosquito bite - The virus is transmitted mainly by the bite of an infected female Aedes aegypti mosquito (and sometimes Aedes albopictus).

The mosquito becomes infected when it bites a person who already has dengue virus in their blood.

After about 8–12 days, that mosquito can then transmit the virus to other people.
