Congratulations NKTI-IPCU!

The National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) Infection Prevention and Control Unit (IPCU) and Maria Lourdes Bernadeth Manipon-Laxina, made history as the first from the Philippines to receive the esteemed APIC Heroes of Infection Prevention Award, presented by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).

The award recognizes exceptional individuals and teams who have made significant and sustained contributions to the field of infection prevention and control (IPC). This recognition is a testament to NKTI IPCU’s relentless efforts in advancing evidence-based practices, championing patient safety, and leading impactful programs that address both local and institutional IPC challenges.

The recognition highlighted NKTI's IPC initiatives, which, through innovative education and training, led to a remarkable reduction in healthcare-associated infection (HAI) cases. From an annual average of 276 HAI cases reported in 2016, the number significantly dropped to 151 by 2023, representing a 45.29% decrease. This progress underscores the effectiveness of IPC protocols in curbing infections, even under the challenging conditions imposed by the pandemic. Furthermore, the IPCU team established robust reporting and monitoring protocols which allowed rapid identification and isolation of patients with communicable diseases upon admission, thus minimizing exposure risk to other patients and healthcare workers.

Additionally, the IPC team has played a pivotal role in the implementation of new technologies and data analytics to track infection trends and outcomes. Through their relentless commitment to patient safety, the IPC team has built a culture of awareness and accountability, setting a high standard for infection prevention in the healthcare community.

This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication of the entire IPCU team, whose collaborative spirit and continuous pursuit of excellence continue to elevate standards in infection control and prevention in the Philippines.

As NKTI continues to strive for excellence in healthcare, this milestone stands as a symbol of hope, inspiration, and the power of collective action in keeping patients and healthcare workers safe.

𝗛𝗨𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗦 𝗢𝗙 𝗡𝗞𝗧𝗜

𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗞𝗧𝗜 is an initiative by the Strategy Management Division that shines a spotlight on the personal and healthcare journeys with us. Every patient’s healthcare journey is a testament to the impact we make, and each step toward recovery is a moment worth celebrating.

This month, discover CJ's inspiring journey of resilience and community. A proud advocate for renal health and patient welfare, CJ, who has personally experienced a kidney transplant, carries his life story with 🌈PRIDE🌈.

-----

I’m CJ. I’m in my 30s, and I survived dialysis for three and a half years and had my kidney transplant in April 2024—and I wouldn’t have survived without my community.

Honestly, hindi ko kinaya mag-isa. The moment I learned I had CKD, I spiraled. I was scared. I shut down. I stopped going to the doctor. My body got weaker, I couldn’t eat, I was confused, and I couldn’t even stand on my own. I didn’t want to look at myself in the mirror anymore—I didn’t recognize myself. There were nights I prayed, “Lord, pwede bang kunin mo na lang ako?” Naiiyak pa rin ako ngayon kapag naaalala ko ’yong mga panahong iyon.

But even at my lowest, I wasn’t alone. My partner was the one who researched everything about my condition, connected with patient groups on Facebook, and brought the information back to me when I didn’t have the strength to look for it myself. Sila ang una kong naging tulay para malaman ko na pwede pala akong magpa-transplant kahit wala kaming pera. That support—those quiet acts of care—kept me going.

When my sister couldn’t donate her kidney, my brother stepped up. And all throughout my dialysis and transplant journey, my family never let me down. Sila yung kasama ko sa buong proseso—from workups, to managing my health complications, hanggang sa mismong transplant.

After I got my transplant, everything changed. I regained my energy, my confidence, and most of all, my sense of purpose. I started joining church activities again, began vlogging, and became active in DialysisPH—using what I went through to help others understand their options.

I often think about patients na walang support system. Kasi alam ko how hard this journey is even with family. I grieve for them. Kaya I push for awareness. I share whatever I can because someone out there needs it—just like I did. My transplant gave me back not just my life, but my mission. And now, I choose to live it well.

📆 𝟮𝟳 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 – The National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) had the privilege of hosting distinguished speaker 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 (𝗗𝗧𝗜) 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗝𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗼 to share invaluable best practices in service delivery.

Addressing NKTI leaders, Undersecretary Pacheco highlighted the power of the Performance Governance System (PGS), a framework she helped institutionalize across the DTI and various government units nationwide. Her insightful discussion underscored the critical role of establishing robust data-sharing knowledge management systems, implementing mechanisms that reward and empower high-performing employees, and strategically leveraging an institution's communication channels to foster a strong culture of excellence.

This pivotal session aligns seamlessly with NKTI's ongoing commitment, driven by its 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗣𝗗𝗗), to equip its leaders with essential soft skills. The goal is to ensure these competencies are not only embodied by leadership but also effectively adopted throughout the organization, driving continuous improvement in service delivery.

The National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI), through its Strategy Management Division - Public Information Office (SMD-PIO), successfully held the second installment of 𝗣.𝗘.𝗔.𝗖.𝗘. 𝗧𝗮𝘆𝗼 — 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 last June 9, 2025 at the Dr. Enrique T. Ona Auditorium.

P.E.A.C.E. Tayo is a unique capacity building program that goes beyond customer engagement. It was developed by the *SMD-PIO* for the various patient communities at the NKTI.

Cognizant of the challenges in dealing with the different patient support groups and alliances formed at the NKTI, such as kidney transplants (recipients and donors); hemodialysis; peritoneal dialysis; lupus; and more recently persons living with HIV (PLHIV) undergoing dialysis treatment at the NKTI, the SMD-PIO established P.E.A.C.E. Tayo!, a capacity building activity for NKTI patients which aims to equip our patient communities with practical skills and knowledge that will improve their physical, mental, and emotional well-being and enable them to build meaningful lives despite being diagnosed with a chronic illness.

Now on its second year and fresh from the success of the original P.E.A.C.E. Tayo activity, this year’s theme "Building a Responsive And Vigilant Environment for Kidney Warriors” was held as part of the activities for this year’s National Kidney Month celebrations. P.E.A.C.E. Tayo 2 included lectures and activities that sought to empower not just patients but also their caregivers on safety and emergency readiness in their households, such as maintaining a safe, emergency-ready, infection-free, nutritious and healthy lifestyle at home after being diagnosed with a chronic illness. Selected patient participants and their caregivers were also able to share short testimonials on how they managed the challenges of care at home.

Listening to the voices of our patients has become a very important part of how NKTI values their contributions to the community. The Institute is not only committed to provide its patients with world class treatment in renal diseases and organ transplantation, but also to making sure its patients have the capacity to take charge of their well-being outside of the hospital environment.

This was the experience of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) in 2018 and 2019 with the upsurge of patients admitted with severe leptospirosis accompanied by kidney failure, liver dysfunction and lung hemorrhage.
