𝗜𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗺: 𝗗𝗿. 𝗠𝘆𝗿𝗻𝗮 𝗕. 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗹
October 8, 1945 - January 24, 2026
The 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗞𝗶𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 (𝗡𝗞𝗧𝗜) mourns the passing of 𝗗𝗿. 𝗠𝘆𝗿𝗻𝗮 𝗕. 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗹, a pioneer in Pediatric Nephrology both within the Institute and throughout the Philippines, who peacefully joined our Creator on Saturday, January 24, 2026.
Dr. Rosel was the 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗞𝗧𝗜 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗡𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 from 1986 to 2006 and likewise had a fruitful and prominent career at her medical alma mater, the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center (UERMMMC), where she served as Department Chairperson in the early 1990s and in the 2000s, the National Children's Hospital (NCH), the Philippine Children's Medical Center (PCMC), St. Luke's Medical Center, and Cardinal Santos Medical Center.
Despite advancing her knowledge of Pediatric Nephrology abroad at the Children's Hospital of Michigan, Wayne State University, in Detroit, Michigan—first as a Senior Resident and as a Nephrology Fellow for two years—she returned to the Philippines equipped with the advanced learning she gained from her time there and ready to impart her expertise with others.
After establishing the Pediatric Nephrology Division at the NKTI in 1986, she went on to train the Institute's next generation of pediatric nephrologists starting in 1987, most notably mentoring prominent NKTI specialists Dr. Ma. Lorna Lourdes Simangan, Dr. Ofelia De Leon, Dr. Maria Angeles Marbella, Dr. Violeta Valderrama, Dr. Esther Tan-Medina, and Dr. Maria Isabel Vilvar. Until the end of her stint in 2006, she was able to mentor 20 specialists, formidable both in clinical practice and in research, both here and abroad.
She went on to become the National Secretary and Treasurer of the Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS) for 4 years, the National Treasurer of the Philippine Society of Nephrology (PSN) for 12 years, and the Pediatric Nephrology Society of the Philippines (PNSP) for 3 years, and garner such awards as the Civil Service Commission (CSC) Pagasa Award in 1999 for the "Batong Bulilit" School, an in-house, informal classroom for long-term pediatric hospital patients.
Dr. Rosel looked beyond the rigors of healthcare delivery and took a more holistic approach to patient care, addressing the needs of the patient, their family, and the community as a whole.
Her passion and dedication to her calling and its advancement, and the intention and care by which she pursued it, will be fondly remembered by all who knew her, and her legacy passed on by those she trained.
The National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) recently marked a significant milestone in its diagnostic capabilities with the blessing of the 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝟵𝟬 𝗥𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗙𝗹𝘂𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘆 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁. 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮, the ceremony highlighted the culmination of years of rigorous planning and procurement. This high-performance system is notably the second machine the Department of Radiology has successfully secured with a ten-year warranty, a strategic achievement that ensures long-term operational reliability and state-of-the-art imaging *modalities* for the Institute’s specialized medical services.
The CombiDiagnost R90 is a versatile dual-modality solution that integrates digital radiography and fluoroscopy, allowing for a wide array of interventional and diagnostic procedures with optimized dose management and enhanced patient comfort. This new unit will be pivotal in diagnosing renal and urologic conditions through specialized examinations such as cystograms, retrograde urethrograms, and fluoro-guided nephrostomy tube changes. Furthermore, its advanced imaging capabilities extend to complex gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and respiratory procedures—including barium swallow procedures, percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainages, and post-operative contrast examinations—strengthening NKTI’s commitment to providing world-class precision medicine and comprehensive patient care.

Healthcare Asia recognizes excellence in the Asia Pacific's healthcare sector, through the Healthcare Asia Awards 2020. Leptospirosis is the scourge of an urban city that has resulted in a devastating disease caused by floods and a rat-infested environment. This was the experience of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) in 2018 and 2019 with the upsurge of patients admitted with severe leptospirosis accompanied by kidney failure, liver dysfunction and lung hemorrhage.
NKTI is a tertiary renal referral center, thus majority of the Leptospirosis patients admitted require dialysis for acute kidney injury. There are patients however with severe disease marked by sepsis and multi-organ failure. We now know that the organ failure resulting from severe leptospirosis is reversible, with recovery ranging from two (2) weeks for the kidneys and up to eight (8) weeks for the lungs.
