(OPINION) STARVATION AND VEGETARIAN DIETS AS SOLE TREATMENT FOR CANCER

It is concerning to hear about potential and diagnosed cancer patients being put in diets that supposedly "starve" the cancer cells and that vegetarian diets actually slow the progression of already diagnosed advanced cancer.

Points:
- Upon research, I did not find any evidence to support this method of treatment
- The only papers I could find are risk analysis studies that show little to no difference in cancer risk between vegetarians and non vegetarians
- There is conflicting evidence about lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease for vegetarians, some say it works based on studies on meditarranean diets, and some say it's harmful due to its effect on the arachidonic pathway and production of HDL which increases inflammation and lowers the good cholesterol (however I still believe that a lot of processed or grilled meat has carcinogens that are culprits for colon cancer)
- Cancer related cachexia or severe weight and muscle loss is already a significant problem with those diagnosed with advanced cancer, and limiting their caloric intake is counterintuitive and detrimental to the well being of a cancer patient and a healthy well balanced and planned diet is definitely better than a starvation or purely vegetarian diet

RECOMMENDATIONS
- Instead of worrying about whether you have cancer or not, and relying on non-evidence based management, just go to your trusted physician, get the age and risk appropriate cancer screening that you need
- For those diagnosed already, there are reasons why there are regimens for the treatment of your specific kind of cancer. Discuss the risks and benefits of each potential treatment. Don't be afraid to ask about your concerns. It is always better to be informed than be ignorant of your disease and its process.

I see a lot of postings on Facebook on medical tips and health issues that are totally wrong or without enough evidence to back it up. Always ask these five questions before reposting anything:

Who? Who runs the Web site? Can you trust them?

What? What does the site say? Do its claims seem too good to be true?

When? When was the information posted or reviewed? Is it up-to-date?

Where? Where did the information come from? Is it based on scientific research?

Why? Why does the site exist? Is it selling something?

Guidance for finding and evaluating online sources of information about complementary health approaches.
