What is GBS?

GBS stands for Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves. This can lead to muscle weakness, numbness, and even paralysis. The exact cause of GBS is unknown, but it often follows an infection, such as a respiratory or gastrointestinal viral infection. Most people with GBS recover fully, but some may experience lingering effects or severe complications. Treatment often includes immunotherapy, such as intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) or plasmapheresis, and supportive care.
