CoEnzyme Q10 supplementation supports healthy glucose metabolism and lipid profiles in women with polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS is the most common endocrine disorder among women between the ages of 18 and 44, affecting as many as 20% of this age group to some level. PCOS is a set of symptoms related to elevated male hormones in women, and results in symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, excess body and facial hair, fertility issues, pelvic pain and skin irregularities. It is associated with increased incidence of type 2 diabetes, obesity, sleep apnea, heart disease, mood disorders and endometrial cancer.
A study recently published in the journal Clinical Endocrinology evaluated the effects of CoQ10 supplementation on glucose metabolism and lipid profiles in subjects with PCOS.
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial included 60 women with PCOS that were assigned to take either CoQ10 supplements (100 mg) or a placebo for 12 weeks.
After 12 weeks, subjects receiving the CoQ10 supplements had significantly lower fasting blood glucose levels and insulin levels, and markers of insulin resistance and beta-cell function were significantly improved compared to the placebo group. Additionally, total serum cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels were significantly improved compared to the placebo group.
Based on the results of this study, CoQ10 supplementation may result in beneficial effects on glucose and lipid metabolism in women diagnosed with PCOS.
