We congratulate Jeryl Shawn Tan, one of our Psychosocial Support Specialists (PSS), for his publication on the Anxiety, Stress, & Coping journal! The article is entitled "Perfectionism, wellbeing, and coping among Filipino university students: a multi-study test of the 2 × 2 model of perfectionism" and is in collaboration with Andrew P. Hill and Daniel J. Madigan. Access the full article here: https://doi.org/10.1080/10615806.2025.2521412

[Abstract]
Background: Perfectionism is an important characteristic among university students given its associations with their wellbeing and coping. One approach to studying student perfectionism is the 2 × 2 model of perfectionism, which examines the interaction between self-oriented perfectionism and socially prescribed perfectionism (SPP). The model is useful for studying student perfectionism, but tests in different cultural contexts remain limited, with some suggesting its hypotheses need modification.
Objectives: This article builds on existing research by presenting two novel studies that provide the model’s first tests in predicting university student wellbeing and coping in a Filipino context, as well as tests of alternate cultural makeup and aggravating factor hypotheses for SPP’s role.
Methods: Following preregistered protocols, two independent samples of Filipino university students completed questionnaires measuring variables of interest – one cross-sectionally (N = 294) and one longitudinally (N = 324) with a 3-month follow-up.
Results and Conclusion: Moderated regression analyses showed support for the model’s hypotheses across both samples depending on the variable. Findings provided clearer support that students with high SPP or a strong belief that others expect perfection are more vulnerable to poorer wellbeing and unhealthy coping, making SPP an aggravating factor in the Filipino context.

We congratulate our Clinical Supervisors, Dr. Divine Love Salvador and Dr. Anna Cristina Tuazon for their publication on Cambridge Prisms: Global Mental Health! The article is entitled "Rising prevalence of depression and widening sociodemographic disparities in depressive symptoms among Filipino youth: findings from two large nationwide cross-sectional surveys" and is in collaboration with Dr. Joseph Puyat and Dr. Sanny Afable. Access the full article here: https://doi.org/10.1017/gmh.2025.39

[Abstract]
Youth depression is a critical target for early intervention due to its strong links with adult depression and long-term functional impairment. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like the Philippines, limited epidemiological data hampers mental health service planning for youth. This study analyzed nationally representative survey data from 2013 (n = 10,949) and 2021 (n = 19,178) to estimate the prevalence of moderate to severe depressive symptoms (MSDS) among Filipinos aged 15–24 years, using the 11-item version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Survey-weighted analyses revealed that MSDS prevalence more than doubled from 9.6% in 2013 to 20.9% in 2021. The rise was most pronounced among females (10.8% to 24.3%), non-cisgender or homonormative individuals (9.7% to 32.3%), youth with primary education or less (10.8% to 26.5%), youth from economically disadvantaged households (10.6% to 25.1%) and youth who were separated, widowed or divorced (18.3% to 41.3%). Disparities in MSDS also widened over time, with some groups bearing a disproportionate burden. These findings underscore the need to expand accessible, high-quality mental health services for youth in LMICs, such as the Philippines. Continued monitoring and targeted interventions are essential to address the rising burden of depression, particularly among underserved and disproportionately affected groups.

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS (Open to all UP Students): User-Centered Design of a Mental Health Chatbot

Hello,

Our team is doing a research about mental health interventions, and we need your help!

Our goal is to apply the user-centered design process in developing a mental health chatbot and assess the feasibility of providing a chat-based mental health support and its effectiveness. Because this is user-centered design, we need your input as a potential user of the chat-based intervention. Your input will help in identifying the requirements and design considerations for the chatbot.

As a UP student, you can participate in an online survey. The online survey will elicit concerns and problems that students would like to discuss in a chat-based mental health support as well as their perceptions about a mental health chatbot. There is also an optional interview that will elicit in-depth information on the students' needs, expectations and design requirements of the mental health chatbot to be developed. Interview participants will come from those who completed the online survey or chat service component of the study.

By participating in the study, you will help us understand what mental health support students need. Your input will be used to design a mental health chatbot and you will help in advancing mental health research for Filipino youth. If you are interested in participating in the study, please sign up using this link or scan the attached QR code. Send us an email at sagip.upd@up.edu.ph for any questions, clarifications or concerns about this research.

Our Story

The UP Diliman Psychosocial Services (UPD PsycServ) was established in October 2017 as a special project under the Office of the Chancellor. This is in line with the quest of “Transforming UP into a Nurturing and Healthy University.” UPD PsycServ is composed of licensed psychologists and highly trained clinical psychology graduate students that provide free mental health and psychosocial wellbeing services to the UP Diliman community.

Guided by a six-component approach (e.g. services, learning, consultation, systems, research, and advocacy) in promoting mental health and wellbeing called GINHAWA: Working Towards Well Being. UPD PsycServ gives importance in nurturing resilience and growth, alongside addressing risks and vulnerabilities, among students, faculty, and staff.

UPD PsycServ provides the following services: Individual Therapy Sessions, Relapse Prevention Group Therapy Sessions, Su***de Prevention and Postvention Programs, Training Workshops, and Personal Wellbeing Workshops. The project is also engaged in different research and advocacy work.

When Luzon was placed under Enhanced Community Quarantine, UPD PsycServ expanded its services to accommodate Filipinos who have been affected and/or disturbed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Psychosocial Support Volunteers were mobilized to ensure wider reach and timelier support.
