A common concern for women facing breast cancer is whether removing only part of the breast is as safe as removing the whole breast. A lumpectomy takes out the tumor and a small amount of surrounding tissue, while a mastectomy removes the entire breast.

Research shows that for many women with early-stage breast cancer, lumpectomy followed by radiation is just as effective as mastectomy in terms of survival.

Talk with your doctor about which surgery is right for your situation.

Many women worry about how breast cancer surgery will change their bodies. Oncoplastic surgery offers an approach that removes the tumor and reshapes the breast in the same procedure.

This means treatment can be both safe and considerate of appearance. It’s often recommended if a larger amount of tissue needs to be removed, and for the right patients, it can help preserve confidence after surgery.

Talk to your surgeon early to see if this option could work for you.

If you want to keep your breast while treating cancer, breast-conserving surgery can remove the tumor and a small margin of healthy tissue while preserving most of your breast. Radiation is usually used to reduce the risk of recurrence. Talk with your surgeon about whether this approach could work for you, how it may affect the shape of your breast, and what recovery will look like.

Did you know it’s possible to have more than one tumor in the same breast? This is called multifocal breast cancer.

The tumors usually appear in the same area of the breast. The good news is that with today’s scans and surgical techniques, some women with multifocal breast cancer may not need a full mastectomy. In certain cases, doctors can safely remove the tumors while preserving the breast.

If this is a concern for you, talk to your doctor about the best treatment plan for you.

I was honored to be one of the speakers at the St. Luke’s Medical Center Quezon City – Institute of Surgery Postgraduate Course. I shared my talk on “Advancing Surgical Approaches for Multifocal Breast Cancer: Techniques and Innovations,” where I discussed the case of a young patient with multifocal breast cancer who chose not to have a mastectomy. The case showed how breast-conserving surgery with oncoplastic techniques can achieve safe outcomes while preserving the breast.

For me, treating breast cancer goes beyond the disease itself. It also means considering body image, quality of life, and patient satisfaction. Surgical innovation gives us the chance to respect patient choices without compromising safety.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to share this case and exchange insights with colleagues. Collaboration and continuous learning make it possible for us to give compassionate, patient-centered care.

Your family health history is a gift you can give to each other. When you ask older relatives about breast or ovarian cancer diagnoses, you're helping everyone make smarter health decisions.

Include both your mom's and dad's sides in these conversations. Write down the names and ages when people were diagnosed. Then share what you discover with your siblings and cousins.

Wondering if breast cancer 'runs in your family'? Here's how to figure that out.

Only 5-10% of breast cancers are inherited, but certain family patterns can help guide your screening decisions. These details help your doctor decide if you need genetic testing or should start screening earlier.
Start by asking your family what they know. Even incomplete information is useful.

There’s a lot of advice out there about food and breast cancer, but not all of it is true.

Your overall lifestyle matters much more than a single ingredient. A balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and safe amounts of soy supports your health, but it’s not about “miracle foods.” Add regular exercise, limit alcohol, and keep a healthy weight.

We put together a myth vs fact guide to make it easier to separate solid advice from misinformation. Share this with someone who could use this info.
