The official global awareness-raising campaign for rare diseases, known as Rare Disease Day, is held on the final day of February every year. This campaign's main objective is to increase awareness among the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their influence on the lives of families living with these conditions.

In the Philippines, the National Rare Disease Week (NDRW) was established in accordance with Presidential Proclamation 1989, which was signed in 2010. It highlights the issues facing the Filipinos affected by rare diseases. Locally, a disease is considered rare if it affects not more than 1 in every 20,000 individuals. Some of these diseases can be detected through the Philippine newborn screening panel.

Rare diseases refer to life-threatening or chronically debilitating diseases, which are of such low prevalence that special combined efforts are needed to address them.

Both celebrations hope to emphasize healthcare access and equitable opportunity.
