The Department of Health - Cagayan Valley Center for Health Development confirms the first case of Mpox in the region as of September 7, 2024. The patient, whose identity will remain confidential to protect privacy, has been isolated and is currently receiving the necessary medical care.
DOH Cagayan Valley is actively conducting contact tracing to identify individuals who may have been exposed to the confirmed case. All close contacts will be monitored for symptoms and provided with appropriate guidance. Regional health officials are also coordinating with local government units to ensure that proper health protocols are being strictly followed to prevent further transmission of the virus.
Common symptoms of Mpox are a skin rash or mucosal lesions, which can last 2โ4 weeks. The rashes are accompanied by fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes. Anyone can get Mpox. Mpox can be transmitted to humans through close, intimate (including sexual) contact with someone who is infectious, with contaminated materials like used clothes or utensils, or with infected animals. Soap and water can kill the virus. When washing contaminated materials, use gloves.
Laboratory confirmation of Mpox is done by testing skin lesion material by PCR. Current turnaround time at the DOH Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) is 2-3 days for testing. Dermatologists and other physicians who are entertaining a high index of suspicion are reminded to record the name and contact information of their patients, and guide them to the nearest major hospital.
Mpox is treated with supportive care. Patients with no other illnesses may stay at home after testing, until all scabs fall off and a new layer of skin forms, typically after 2-4 weeks.
DOH Cagayan Valley urges the public to remain calm but vigilant. The Regional Director Dr. Amelita Pangilinan emphasized the importance of adhering to standard health protocols, including regular hand washing, wearing face masks in crowded areas, and seeking medical attention if symptoms of Mpox develop. "We are working closely with healthcare providers and local government units to contain the virus and protect the public's health," RD Pangilinan said.
Residents are also encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to avoid spreading misinformation. The DOH CVCHD will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.
