The term of Ego Defense Mechanism was initially started in psychoanalytic therapy. Sigmund Freud conceptualized personality into id, ego and superego in which each part has its own role to play. Ego is the part which deals with the reality and copes with the demands of the id and superego. Id seeks for fulfillment of needs and wants while superego works in ensuring ego to act morally.

Anxiety arises when the ego cannot deal effectively with the demands and hence ego employs a variety of defense mechanism to reduce that particular stressful feelings.

Ego defense mechanisms were initially founded by Freud and soon further developed by his daughter, Anna Freud and other psychoanalysts.
