In line with the celebration of World Health Day, an enlightening OPD Lecture was conducted last April 8, 2025, at the Outpatient Department Lobby of Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center (ITRMC).

The informative session featured engaging discussions on โ€œPinggang Pinoyโ€ and the โ€œ10 Kumainments, two key concepts in promoting proper nutrition and a healthier lifestyle for every Filipino.

We were honored to have Dr. Reynald Estandian, Medical Nutrition Specialist, as our resource speaker, along with Benguet State University Nutrition and Dietetics Interns: Ms. Marjorie Linggayo, Ms. Guvy Shane Gup-ap and Ms. Jezebel Kate Galwac.

Their lectures emphasized the importance of balanced meals, mindful eating habits, and practical steps in preventing lifestyle-related diseases through proper nutrition.

This activity highlights ITRMCโ€™s continued commitment to public education and health promotion, especially in raising awareness about the role of nutrition in disease prevention and overall wellness.

According to the World Health Organization, overweight and obesity are excessive fat accumulation that poses health risks. A BMI over 25 is considered overweight, and over 30 is obese.

In 2019, 5 million NCD deaths were linked to high BMI. Obesity rates are rising in both adults and children. From 1990 to 2022, obesity in children aged 5โ€“19 grew from 2% to 8%, while adult obesity more than doubled from 7% to 16%. Obesity now outweighs underweight in every region except South-East Asia, and middle-income countries are seeing some of the highest obesity rates worldwide.

At the individual level, people may be able to reduce their risk by adopting preventive interventions at each step of the life cycle, starting from pre-conception and continuing during the early years. These include:

๐Ÿคฐ ensure appropriate weight gain during pregnancy;
๐Ÿคฑ practice exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months after birth and continued breastfeeding until 24 months or beyond;
๐Ÿ‘ฏ support behaviours of children around healthy eating, physical activity, sedentary behaviours and sleep, regardless of current weight status;
๐Ÿ‘‰ limit screen time;
๐ŸŒ limit consumption of sugar sweetened beverages and energy-dense foods and promote other healthy eating behaviours;
๐Ÿ‘ enjoy a healthy life (healthy diet, physical activity, sleep duration and quality, avoid to***co and alcohol, emotional self-regulation);
๐Ÿฅฆ limit energy intake from total fats and sugars and increase consumption of fruit and vegetables, as well as legumes, whole grains and nuts; and
๐ŸงŽ engage in regular physical activity.

COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Colorectal cancer is a type of cancer that affects the colon (large intestine) or re**um. It is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide.

Common symptoms include diarrhea, constipation, blood in the stool, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and low iron levels.

Many people will not have symptoms in the early stages of the disease, however the risk of colorectal cancer can be reduced by following this tips to keep your colon healthy ๐Ÿ˜Š.

Around 9% of adult Filipinos have goiters, a thyroid-related enlargement. Data from the Philippine Thyroid Association's Thyromobile showed that 8.53% of nearly 5,000 tested patients had thyroid function abnormalities. A survey of 7,227 volunteers also found that 8.9% had goiter.
