FACTS ABOUT GLAUCOMA

Glaucoma is a disease that usually occurs when fluid builds up in the front part of your eye. The extra fluid increases the pressure in your eye, damaging the optic nerve. There are two major types. Open-angle glaucoma, the most common, happens gradually. It is painless and causes no vision changes at first. As the disease progresses, blind spots develop in your peripheral vision. Angle-closure glaucoma is a true emergency requiring immediate medical attention to prevent blindness. Early symptoms include blurred vision, halos, mild headaches or eye pain.

WAYS TO PREVENT CATARACTS

Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat when you're out in the sun. If you smoke, quit; people who smoke have two to three times higher risk of developing cataracts than nonsmokers. Eat a nutritious diet with lots of fruits and vegetables and minimally processed foods. Wear proper safety eyewear during sports and other activities. Minimize your alcohol consumption. Get regular eye checkups.

CHOOSE EYE-FRIENDLY TOYS AND GADGETS FOR KIDS THIS CHRISTMAS

✅ Select toys that are appropriate for a child's age and maturity.
✅ Avoid buying toys with sharp, protruding or projectile parts.
✅ Make sure that the label states that the toy complies with national product safety standards.
✅ Buy toys that are visually vibrant, as these help with the development of infants' brain and eyesight. Blocks of varying sizes and colors are one of the most recommended toys by pediatricians as they are attractive and safe.
