WHAT IS LASER REFRACTIVE SURGERY?

Laser refractive surgery, such as LASIK, is a commonly performed type of refractive surgery. It corrects refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism or presbyopia. With laser refractive surgeries, your ophthalmologist uses lasers to change the shape of your cornea and improve the way light rays are focused on the retina. The aim of the procedure is to reduce or even eliminate your need for eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information on laser refractive surgery.

EYE HEALTH TIPS FOR PEOPLE WITH CATARACT

Have an annual eye exam if you’re 65 years or older, every two years if younger. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. Wear a hat and sunglasses with at least 99% UV protection during sunny days. Quit smoking. Use brighter lights for reading and other activities. Limit night driving once night vision, halos, or glare become problems. Consider cataract surgery if your cataract already interferes with daily activities.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON EYE INJURIES AMONG ATHLETES?

Blunt trauma causes most sports-related eye injuries. Blunt trauma occurs when something hits you in the eye. Some serious examples are an orbital blowout fracture (a broken bone under the eyeball), a ruptured globe (broken eyeball), and a detached retina. Bruising of the eye and eyelid (“black eye”) looks bad but usually is a less serious injury.

When playing sports make sure to protect your eyes from possible injuries.
