"For six years, I’ve been dedicated to educating people about HIV, breaking the stigma, and ensuring that no one faces discrimination. But sometimes, it still happens."

Joan Tagala, a Project Support Officer at Cebu City Social Hygiene Clinic, recalls a patient whose family forced him to live separately out of fear of infection. She patiently explained that HIV cannot be transmitted through shared food and worked to correct misconceptions that fuel stigma.

Her commitment goes beyond education—it’s about compassionate action. During the pandemic, Joan personally delivered life-saving medication to clients unable to visit the clinic. One patient, lost to follow-up, was in critical condition. She didn’t give up. She brought a medical technologist to his home, delivered his blood samples to the lab, and ensured he received the care he needed.

"A year later, he was adherent to treatment, looking healthier and stronger. Seeing that transformation—that’s what makes everything worth it. From a very bad place to a better future, it’s a reminder of why we do what we do."

At the heart of HIV care are women like Joan, whose unwavering commitment saves lives, restores hope, and proves that treatment works.

This Women’s Month, we celebrate the women in healthcare, advocacy, and community service who go above and beyond to make healthcare accessible and stigma-free for all. 💜

HIV treatment saves lives and stops transmission.
