Freezing Nitrogen Ethanol Composite (FNEC) is a semi-solid material typically from a mixture of
liquid nitrogen and 95% ethanol, often in a 3 to 1
ratio. Developed to be safer than pure liquid nitrogen, the mixture forms a semi-solid state which is easier to apply and control during surgery.
⚒️ Applications in Orthopedic Surgery
✅ Giant Cell Tumors (GCT)
- effective adjuvant treatment for bone tumors
such as GCT to destroy residual tumor cells
after curettage
✅ Implant Disinfection
- studies suggest FNEC can disrupt biofilms on
Staphylococcus aureus-contaminated implants
potentially reducing implant-related infections
⚒️ Benefits of FNEC Over Liquid Nitrogen
✅ Reduced Spill Risk
- the semi-solid nature of FNEC minimizes the
risk of accidental spills into the surgical field
✅ Less Tissue Damage
- comparative studies show FNEC causes
radiant cooling damage, such as skin epidermal
rupture and muscle apoptosis to adjacent
normal tissues compared to liquid nitrogen
✅ Improved Safety
- these factors make FNEC a safer alternative
for cryoablation in complex orthopedic
procedures
