| Rise in HIV cases tied to expanded testing — DOH

SAN FERNANDO City, La Union (PIA)— A 500 percent increase in reported human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases in the country is largely due to improved access to testing services, according to the Department of Health (DOH)-Ilocos Center for Health Development (CHD).

Doctor Rheuel Bobis, Ilocos CHD’s medical officer and head of communicable diseases, said the surge reflects improved detection—not a sudden spike in new infections.

“It’s crucial for people to know their status. Early diagnosis means early treatment, which improves health outcomes and helps stop the spread of the virus. Testing protects not just the individual, but the entire community,” Bobis said.
