Here is my response to a post about statins being overprescribed. Here are the key takeaway points.
1. We need to stop focusing so heavily on LDL and need to place more importance on blood sugars, A1c and fasting insulin.
2. A blood test does not predict your risk of heart attack or stroke. Echocardiograms, treadmill stress tests and vascular scans do.
3. According to the data, statins decrease risk of heart attack, stroke and death by approximately 1.2% (absolute risk reduction). The pharmaceutical companies report a 20-30% risk reduction based on artificial math called Relative Risk Reduction.
4. We need cholesterol for NUMEROUS components and pathways in the human body. We should not be aiming to lower it as much as possible.
5. The liver makes 80% of the cholesterol needed by the human body. Only 20% comes from what you eat.
