What is UVGI?
Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation, or UVGI, is the use of ultraviolet (UV-C) energy to kill viral, bacterial, and fungal organisms. UVC energy at 253.7 nanometers provides the most germicidal effect. The application of UVC energy to inactivate microorganisms is also known as Germicidal Irradiation or UVGI.

How does Upper-Room UVGI work?

What is Ultraviolet C?
The entire UV spectrum can kill or inactivate many microorganism species, preventing them from replicating. UVC energy at 253.7 nanometers provides the most germicidal effect. The application of UVC energy to inactivate microorganisms is also known as Germicidal Irradiation or UVGI.

UVC exposure inactivates microbial organisms such as bacteria and virusesby altering the structure and the molecular bonds of their DNA(Deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA is a “blue print” these organisms use to develop, function and reproduce. By destroying the organism’s ability to reproduce, it becomes harmless since it cannot colonize. After UVC exposure, the organism dies off leaving no offspring, and the population of the microorganism diminishes rapidly.

Ultraviolet germicidal lamps provide a much more powerful and concentrated effect of ultraviolet energy than can be found naturally. Germicidal UV provides a highly effective method of destroying microorganisms.

Ultraviolet-C (UVC) radiation is a known disinfectant for air, water, and nonporous surfaces. UVC radiation has effectively been used for decades to reduce the spread of bacteria, such as tuberculosis.
UVC radiation has been shown to destroy the outer protein coating of the SARS-Coronavirus, which is a different virus from the current SARS-CoV-2 virus. The destruction ultimately leads to inactivation of the virus.

The UVGI Upper room unit is designed to allow direct Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation of viruses and bacteria in the air across a wide area, without any risk to individuals occupying the area. The unit is fitted high on the wall meaning direct exposure to people is impossible, however it can still target airborne contamination across the area. “Thermal convection” describes the circulation of all air within a room, air heated by a radiator or similar becomes warm and rises and at the same time cooling air from the ceiling falls in an ongoing cycle. Taking advantage of thermal convection and the circulation of air from ventilation systems, the unit is constantly reducing all airborne germs with testing demonstrating over 99% reduction in bacteria levels.
