There are currently over 23,000 ATMs nationwide. An ATM in General Luna, Quezon brings back a special memory - papa’s unparalleled community work.

One summer day about 15 years ago , I woke up at 2AM to find papa engrossed with research on his laptop. He was working on bringing the first ATM to General Luna.

It was a long shot to accomplish his goal as our town was facing stiff competition from well-established municipalities. Nonetheless, he banked on his irrational work ethic. He figured out that 2AM was the peak internet speed in a town 250KM away from Manila.

My privileged mind told him that an ATM was nothing special. He responded that a machine may be common in Manila but it would be life-changing for the majority of our town. Farmers and fishermen lose at least a day’s worth of earnings from the 4-hour two-way travel time just to get remittance from their children. An ATM access would provide significant financial relief for most.

In the process of passionately explaining his desperation, it stood out that papa simply wanted a better life for everybody. There was no hint of personal agenda.

Today I am sharing one of his many inspiring stories as I receive the Gawad Gintong Parangal from the town of General Luna. I know that this is an award papa never chased but always deserved.

Papa, this award is for you. I know you have the best view.
