I hear this a lot. And honestly - pre-academic skills are not important to me at all. I would never suggest working on these with a toddler - unless that’s what they love and how they play!

I WOULD want them to have fun and play - however that may look!

When a child gets an autism diagnosis, it can be an overwhelming experience for parents.

But please know that getting that diagnosis will help everyone better understand your child’s way of being human…better understand your child’s neurology…better understand how to support your child in ways that allow them to thrive as their authentic self.

Before my son’s autism diagnosis in 2007, many people referred to him as 𝘯𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘺 because his sensory needs were not being met. He was overwhelmed and dysregulated. And guess what? People wrongly assumed that he was being willfully disobedient and non-compliant instead of recognizing his behavior as a stress response.

Autism. Say it with me.
AUTISM. Say it again. AUTISM. A different but valid way of being human.

Get the diagnosis.

It matters.

And then find neurodiversity-affirming providers to support regulation, connection, communication, and self-advocacy.

💛 Written with love from a parent of an autistic child. 💛

Great ideas to promote speech and language this holiday season 😊

Great ideas to promote speech and language this holiday season 😊

🎄Christmas is just around the corner, which means kids will be opening presents soon! Did you know opening presents is another way to promote speech and language skills?!

♥️SAVE this post so you can see how to target these skills.

Rather than just opening presents quietly, teach your child:

◾️VERBS
◾️PREPOSITIONS
◾️REQUESTING
◾️FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS
◾️EXCLAMATORY WORDS

Remember to MODEL these words vs. asking questions constantly.

For example, instead of asking, “Do you want to open it?”, you can model, “open present” etc. The sentence length will vary depending on where your child is at. So if your child is currently producing single words, you would use “open”, but if your child is starting to put 2-words together you can model, “open gift”.

💬When does your family usually like to open presents, Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?

💌SAVE, TAG, SHARE this post with other families who may want to try these tips next week!
