White spot lesions are among the earliest visible signs of tooth decay. They appear as chalky, opaque patches on the ename often near the gum line or in areas where plaque builds up. These spots develop when acids produced by plaque bacteria lower the mouth’s pH, causing calcium and phosphate to leach out of the enamel in a process called demineralization.

At this stage, the enamel surface remains intact, meaning the damage is still reversible. Fluoride toothpaste, professional fluoride varnish, remineralizing agents, improved oral hygiene, and reduced sugar intake can help restore lost minerals and strengthen the enamel.

If left untreated, these lesions can progress into cavities requiring fillings. Early detection and preventive care are key to protecting long-term dental health.

Once braces are removed, teeth have a natural tendency to move toward their original positions, a phenomenon called orthodontic relapse. This occurs because the surrounding bone and periodontal ligaments need time to remodel and stabilize following treatment.

Retainers play a critical role in maintaining teeth in their new positions while these supporting structures adapt. Without consistent use, unwanted movement can compromise the results of months or years of orthodontic care.

The American Association of Orthodontists emphasizes that wearing retainers exactly as prescribed is key to preserving a straight smile. Consistent retainer use safeguards both the alignment and the investment made in achieving it.
