Ang HIV ay nakukuha sa pamamagitan ng pakikipag-talik nang walang proteksyon, pag gamit ng mga hiringgilyang nagamit na ng iba, at sa pagsalin ng dugong hindi dumaan sa maayos na pagsusuri. Maaari din itong makuha ng mga sanggol habang sila ay ipinagbubuntis, ipinapanganak, o kaya naman ay sa gatas ng ina na positibo dito.

Hindi ito nakukuha sa kaswal na interaksyon kagaya ng pag halik, pag yakap at pag hiram ng kanilang personal na gamit.

Ang HIV ay walang lunas para gumaling, pero mayroon na itong gamot upang mapanatiling mababa ang dami ng virus sa iyong dugo at mapanatiling malakas at masigla ang iyong pangangatawan.

Ang HIV ay hindi na dapat ituring na sentensya. Maaari ka nang mabuhay nang normal, basta maagang maaagapan at makapag simula ng gamutan.
