A retinal tear happens when the retina, the delicate tissue at the back of your eye, is damaged. This tear can allow fluid to seep underneath the retina, leading to retinal detachment—a serious condition that can result in permanent vision loss if not addressed promptly.

Signs to watch for:

- Sudden flashes of light
- Floating spots or shadows in your vision
- A sudden decline in vision

If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s essential to seek immediate medical attention. Early treatment can help preserve your vision and prevent further damage. Regular eye exams are also crucial for catching potential issues before they progress.

Treatment options for retinal detachment include:

1. Laser Surgery (Laser Photocoagulation): A laser seals retinal tears to prevent further detachment.
2. Cryopexy (Freezing Treatment): Freezing treatment around a tear can help reattach the retina.
3. Vitrectomy: Removes the vitreous gel and replaces it with a saline solution, gas, or silicone oil to help reattach the retina.
4. Scleral Buckling: A silicone band is placed around the eye to push the retina back into place.
5. Pneumatic Retinopexy: A gas bubble is injected into the eye to push the retina back in position.
6. Silicone Oil Injection: A silicone oil is injected to hold the retina in place during healing, especially after more severe detachment.

Prompt treatment is critical to preserve your vision. If you're at risk or notice any symptoms, don’t wait—schedule an eye exam with your doctor right away!

Saint Paul Hospital Surigao now offers the Farnsworth test! This assessment evaluates color vision deficiency by testing the ability to arrange colored caps. Unlike the Ishihara test, which mainly identifies red-green color blindness, the Farnsworth test provides a broader evaluation of color discrimination, detecting subtle variations in color vision for a better understanding of each patient’s needs.

Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion (BRVO) in a young patient necessitates a comprehensive systemic investigation. Potential underlying causes, including coagulopathies, autoimmune disorders, and systemic hypertension, should be thoroughly explored to identify and manage contributing factors. Early systemic evaluation is vital for appropriate treatment and to prevent recurrence or complications.

Additionally, therapeutic interventions such as panretinal photocoagulation and anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) injections play a crucial role in managing BRVO. Panretinal photocoagulation can help reduce the risk of neovascularization, while anti-VEGF therapy is effective in controlling macular edema and improving visual outcomes.

Good day,

For our 6th anniversary event on July 18, 2024, we will be offering free eye check-ups. To ensure fairness, we will not be accepting advance reservations. Instead, a sign-up sheet will be available with the security guard house at 6 AM on the day of the event, where you can place your name.

We anticipate a high volume of patients as we have only one doctor available. Therefore, we kindly ask everyone to be patient. Please note that no free eyeglasses will be distributed; only comprehensive eye examinations with consultations will be provided.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Best regards,

SPSUH Eye Center Team

Individuals who qualify for the DSWD visual disability card are those with poor vision (20/70 or worse in the better eye), tunnel vision (less than 20 degrees wide in the better eye), or blurry vision that cannot be improved with glasses, medication, or surgery.

Wearing prescription glasses, being color blind, or experiencing night blindness does not automatically qualify one as visually disabled
