(Legazpi City, August 14, 2025) The Albay Provincial Health Office (APHO) launched its first cataract surgery at the Provincial Eye Clinic located at Dr. Lorenzo P. Ziga Memorial District Hospital (DLPZMDH) in Tabaco City.

Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Estela B. Zenit stated that the launch marks a significant step toward providing accessible eye care services for Albayanos.

Three patients underwent cataract surgery during the launch after completing a series of screening check-ups.

Zenit also shared that the clinic offers additional services, including comprehensive eye screening and foreign body removal, every Wednesday and Thursday at the Out-Patient Department (OPD).

She emphasized the importance of these services for low-income and underserved patients who lack access to private care or insurance.

“Sa hiling ko, dakulaon na tabang ini na igwa kitang government-managed eye clinic kasi maki-cater ta su mga patients na dai maka-afford ki mahal na ophthalmic services, lalo na free of charge ini under PhilHealth cataract surgery package,” she said.

Zenit also credited PGA Health Consultant Dr. Ed Sarmiento and their former partnership with The Fred Hollows Foundation for helping make the clinic operational.

(Legazpi City, August 14, 2025) Matagumpay na na-operahan ang kauna-unahang cataract patient sa Dr. Lorenzo P. Ziga Memorial District Hospital (DLPZMDH) kasabay ng launching ng cataract surgery services sa Eye Clinic ng nasabing hospital.

Ayon kay Dr. Jomel Lapides, isa sa mga attending ophthalmologist, ang isinagawang operasyon kay Tatay Rodolfo Baluncio ay bunsod ng mature cataract condition nito.

Batay sa isinagawang acuity tests sa pasyente, napag-alamang apektado na ng katarata ang kaniyang dalawang mata kung kaya't nangangailangan na ito ng agarang operasyon.

Ani Lapides, sa pamamagitan ng microincisional phacoemulsification, tatanggalin ang katarata at papalitan ng artificial lens ang mga mata ng pasyente.

Ayon kay Tatay Rodolfo, 64-anyos na laborer na tubong Salvacion Malilipot, Albay, mahigit isang taon na niyang iniinda ang malabong paningin dahil sa nasabing sakit.

Lubos naman ang kaniyang pasasalamat sa Pamahalaang Lokal ng Albay, sa pamunuan ng DLPZMDH, Department of Health at sa Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) dahil sa libreng operasyong natanggap.

"Grabe man ang pasasalamat ko saindo, sa gobyerno, kay Governor, sa PhilHealth, sa Mahal na Diyos ta kami warang-wara man, naaraam mi lang na igwa naman kaini digdi sa Ziga kaya nagdigdi tulos kami para mag-inquire," saad ni Tatay Rodolfo.

Matapos ang matagumpay na operasyon, nais aniya ni Tatay Rodolfo na muling maipagpatuloy ang pagtatrabaho na nahinto dahil sa katarata.

"Puwedeng makabalik naman ako sa pagtrabaho, laborer man kaya ako," dagdag pa niya.

Samantala, ayon kay Chief-of-Hospital (COH) Dr. Aires O. Perillo, bukod sa cataract surgery, nagsasagawa rin sila ng iba pang eyecare services kagaya ng acuity tests, eye refraction, foreign body removal, pterygium surgery, at chalazion excision.

ON COVID-19 CASES IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

The Department of Health is actively monitoring COVID-19 trends including the recently reported increases in specific areas of Southeast Asia. We are actively coordinating through established mechanisms like the ASEAN. This gives us verified information, boosting readiness even as we see no cause for alarm.

In the Philippines, as of May 3, 2025, we have observed an 87% decrease in cases and fatalities from 2024, with only 1,774 COVID-19 cases reported this year compared to 14,074 last year. The case fatality rate is only 1.13%. Recent trends also indicate a slight decrease in reported cases over the past three to four weeks. From 71 cases in the week of March 23 to April 5, 2025, it has decreased to 65 cases from April 6 to 19.

We are committed to keeping the public informed and will provide timely updates should the situation evolve. We encourage everyone to stay informed through official DOH channels, and continue practicing the same preventive measures that protect from other diseases:

✅Cover your mouth when coughing and sneezing
