“Barangay Talalang Hosts First Blood Drive with PRC - Kalinga Chapter”

Album 2 of 2

In a light and welcoming atmosphere on August 14, the pews of St. Margaret Episcopal Church in Barangay Talalang were carefully moved aside to make room for a lifesaving blood drive. The drive was an initiative organized by the Rural Health Unit (RHU) of Balbalan in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) - Kalinga Chapter.

“For every blood donated, there is a human life extended,” read the slogan on the event’s tarpaulin, reflecting the spirit of community that Balbalan residents are known for bringing to blood drives.

Before the bloodletting began, Ms. Sheena Mahoy, RMT, who led the PRC - Kalinga Chapter’s team of volunteers, gave a short talk covering the basics of blood donation, including the proper use of the donor card and the blood partnership between RHU Balbalan and the Chapter. She also addressed questions from residents who were eager to learn more.

“First time mi ditoy Talalang (This is our first time here in Talalang),” she said.

Ms. Mahoy was joined by volunteers Ferdilyn Palicas Sallaya, Florie Ann Sallaya, Valerie Wasigan, Jaytikay Gassingga, and Christopher Amangan.

Representing RHU Balbalan was Dr. Lenard Mien Banatao, who led their delegation.

“SJGH Personnel Go Beyond the Call of Duty to Donate Blood”

On August 13, the lobby of San Juan General Hospital (SJGH) was transformed into more than just a waiting area. It became a blood donation site open to everyone entering and leaving the hospital.

Hosted by the hospital, the blood drive was in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) - Kalinga Chapter.

Most of the donors came from within: doctors, nurses, medical technologists/medical laboratory scientists, and admininstrative staff. All took the initiative to go beyond their duty and offer a more personal kind of care.
