According to a recent peer-reviewed study published in Nature Food, Guyana is currently the only country out of 186 surveyed that is fully self-sufficient in all seven major food groups. These include fruits, vegetables, dairy, fish, meat, plant-based proteins, and starchy staples. This means Guyana can feed its entire population without relying on food imports, a rare achievement in today’s interconnected world.

The study, led by researchers from the University of Göttingen and the University of Edinburgh, analyzed food production and nutritional sufficiency across the globe. While many countries can produce enough of one or two food groups, Guyana stood out as the only nation meeting domestic demand across all categories.

According to the Department of Public Information in Guyana, this success is partly due to increased investment in agriculture since 2020, including support for rice, seed production, and sustainable farming practices.
