Dr. Zaida Villanobos-Centinaje post.

As May (Cervical Cancer Awareness Month) comes to a close, let’s carry the advocacy forward in the months ahead.

In one of the photos, I’m holding a creative model of the cervix made from chicken meat, used during our cervical cancer screening activity. In the simulation, the “cervix” underwent thermal ablation following a positive result from VIA (Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid).

Cervical cancer remains a serious threat—it is the second leading cause of cancer among Filipino women of all ages. Alarmingly, 75% are diagnosed at a late stage, with an estimated 23 new cases and 12 deaths every single day. It is caused by persistent infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is commonly transmitted through sexual contact.

That’s why prevention is key. We continue to advocate for:

1. HPV DNA Testing – a highly sensitive test that detects high-risk HPV strains before cervical changes develop. Shown in two of the photos is the COBAS machine, now available at EVMC.

2. Pap Smear – a proven screening method that detects precancerous cervical changes early.

3. VIA Screening – a fast, low-cost option, especially useful in resource-limited settings.

4. HPV Vaccination – ideally given before sexual debut, but still beneficial even later in life.

Cervical cancer is preventable and treatable when caught early. Let’s keep the momentum going beyond May! Get screened, get vaccinated, and help spread awareness. Together, we can save lives!

Subject: Urgent Update on MPOX Protocol

Dear Leyteños and Samarnanon,

Good morning.

As a board-certified dermatologist, Youthplus Medical Group would like to provide important information regarding the recent spread of MPOX in various cities and municipalities. Although we have not yet encountered any patients with this condition at our Tacloban and Ormoc City branches, we have implemented a "no face mask, no entry" policy to prioritize the health and safety of our staff and patients.

We are currently awaiting further directives from the Department of Health (DOH) and plan to begin triaging at the clinic next week. It’s worth noting that MPOX has been reported in Maasin, Leyte. While we aim to avoid causing unnecessary apprehensions, it is crucial to remain vigilant, as this virus has the potential for easy transmission.

We encourage everyone to focus on strengthening their immune systems through adequate sleep and regular exercise. Let us work together to monitor the situation and hope for a positive outcome.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Best regards,
Dr. Yohann Kae Luzano

To adequately prepare for a Pap smear, it's important to follow specific guidelines to ensure accurate results and a comfortable experience. Below are detailed recommendations on what to avoid, when to schedule your appointment, additional preparation steps, and tips for comfort during the procedure.

# # # What to Avoid

1. **Douching**: Refrain from douching for at least 2 to 3 days prior to your test. Douching can alter the natural balance of bacteria in the va**na and may interfere with the results of the Pap test.

2. **Vaginal Medications**: Avoid using va**nal products such as medicines, spermicidal foams, creams, or jellies for 2 to 3 days before your appointment. These substances can affect the cervical cells that your doctor will examine.

3. **Sexual Activity**: It's advisable to abstain from sexual in*******se for at least 24 hours leading up to the test. Sexual activity can irritate the cervix and potentially impact the test's outcome.

4. **Tampons**: Please use pads instead of tampons for at least 2 days before the test to prevent any interference with the cervical area.

5. **Spermicidal Products**: Avoid the use of birth-control foams, gels, or jellies for up to 7 days before the test. These products can affect the cervical cells and lead to less reliable results.

# # # When to Schedule

- **Timing of Appointment**: It is best to schedule your Pap smear at least 5 days after your menstrual period has ended. This timing helps ensure the cervix is clear of blood and other fluids that could obscure test results.

- **Treatment for Infections**: If you are receiving treatment for a cervical or va**nal infection, it is recommended to wait at least 2 weeks after the treatment has concluded before scheduling your Pap test. This allows time for healing and ensures accurate results.

# # # What Else to Do

- **Bladder Preparation**: Arrive at your appointment with an empty bladder. This can enhance your comfort during the procedure.

- **Discuss Sexual Activity**: Be open with your doctor about any sexual activity leading up to the test, as this information can be relevant for assessment.

- **Medications and Conditions**: Inform your healthcare provider about any medications you may be taking or any medical conditions that could influence the accuracy of the test results. This discussion is crucial for personalized care.

# # # Comfort Tips

- **Relaxation Techniques**: To reduce anxiety, practice deep breathing exercises and relaxation techniques before your appointment. Consider visualizing a calm and soothing environment to ease tension.

- **Positioning**: Do not hesitate to ask your healthcare provider if you can change positions during the exam if you start to feel uncomfortable. Your comfort is important.

- **Pain Management**: If you have concerns about potential discomfort during the procedure, consider taking an over-the-counter pain medication beforehand. Consult with your doctor about this option and the appropriate dosage to ensure a more pleasant experience.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure that your Pap smear is conducted smoothly, and you receive the most accurate results possible. Remember, open communication with your healthcare provider is key, so don’t hesitate to ask questions or voice concerns during your appointment.
