Q: Why is glaucoma called the "silent thief of sight"?

A: Glaucoma is often termed the "silent thief of sight" because it typically progresses without noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss occurs. It involves damage to the optic nerve, often due to increased eye pressure. Regular eye examinations are essential for early detection and management to prevent irreversible vision loss.

HOW IS GLAUCOMA DIAGNOSED?

Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve and can result in vision loss and even blindness. It is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Glaucoma is diagnosed through a complete eye exam performed by an ophthalmologist. During a glaucoma exam, your ophthalmologist will measure your eye pressure, inspect your eye's drainage angle, examine your optic nerve for damage, test your peripheral (side) vision, take a picture or computer measurement of your optic nerve, and measure the thickness of your cornea.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information

HOW CAN SORE EYES BE PREVENTED?

Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water. Minimize hand-to-eye contact. Use your own towels, eyedrops, makeup and sunglasses. Disinfect surfaces, doorknobs, counters, elevator buttons, and handrails with dilute bleach solution. Wear eyeglasses or sunglasses on windy days to protect your eyes from foreign particles. Avoid crowded places. Wash clothes, towels, pillowcases, and anything else which may have come in contact with a person with sore eyes.

Talk to your ophthalmologist for more information.

WHAT CAUSES SORE EYES?

Sore eyes can be caused by a virus, bacteria or allergies. Viral conjunctivitis, the most common, is usually caused by the virus that causes the common cold. Bacterial conjunctivitis can sometimes be due to the bacteria that cause strep throat. Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are very contagious. Allergic conjunctivitis, which is not contagious, is an allergic reaction to pollen, animals, cigarette smoke, pool chlorine, car fumes or other environmental factors.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.
