Taking turns and sharing in early childhood develops children’s social emotional skills in the early years, helping them to thrive in school and later life.
We see turn taking begin when playing peek-a-boo with babies. But it doesn't end there! Examples of turn taking include: So what does turn taking mean? Turn taking, or the act of taking turns in a situation, conversation, or even means sharing space and time with another individual. Turn taking can look like many things:

💙Speaking and then listening when others speak in a conversation
💙Taking turns in a game
💙Taking turns in line to get a drink from a water fountain
💙Waiting one’s turn in a food like like in the cafeteria
💙Taking turns in speaking during circle time or sharing time in the classroom
💙Taking turns with a favorite toy
💙Waiting while others have an opportunity to receive services such as a food server in a restaurant

"Crossing midline is one of those motor skills we do constantly throughout the day, but never really give a second thought. And that automaticity of motor movements is a good thing, too! Imagine processing the action to use one hand to pull a door open. Imagine the time it would take to shower, dress, put on and tie your shoes if you had to process through the action to move your hands fluidly across the middle line of your body.

🧠Crossing midline refers to moving the body (hand/arm/foot/leg across an imaginary line that runs vertically down the center of the body to the other side (and vise versa). Additionally, crossing midline also refers to twisting the body in rotation around this imaginary line, as well as leaning the upper or body across the middle of the body.

Let’s break it down further:

📍Midline of the body is an imaginary line that drops from the middle of the head, straight down over the nose, to the belly button and divides the body into left and right sides. Imagine a line that starts at the middle part of your hair and runs straight down your forehead and ends at the core of your abdomen. This imaginary line effectively divides your body into a symmetrical (mostly) left side and a right side.

📍“Crossing the midline” is a simplified way to indicate that part of the body moves over that imaginary line. This can look like 3 different aspects of movement..."

There are three general different types of prompts that can be used as graded support for those working on goals. These types can be broken down into different supports (like positional or gestural prompts which are a version of visual prompting).

There are different types of prompts that we use in therapy:

⏰Visual prompts- this can include modeling and gestures. This can also include positional prompts, like placing items in a different place or more prominent place that offers a visual clue.
🔔Verbal prompts- this can include words or sounds like a bell to change classes at school
🫳Physical prompts- this can include hand-over hand support, slight nudges, or light touch.

Read about this and how these prompts support goal achievement: https://www.theottoolbox.com/what-is-prompting/
