Ang GERD ay isang chronic digestive disease kung saan ang acid sa tiyan ay bumabalik sa esophagus (daanan ng pagkain sa pagitan ng bibig at tiyan). Ang pagbalik ng acid ay nagdudulot ng iritasyon sa esophagus kaya nakakaramdam ng sakit.

Nangyayari ang acid reflux kapag nagrerelax ang mga sphincter muscle sa ibaba ng esophagus. Dahil dito bumabalik ang mga acids sa stomach papuntang esophagus. Ito ang nagdudulot ng heartburn.
