2025 Nutrition Month Highlights Food and Nutrition Security as Human Right

The National Nutrition Council (NNC) reinforces its commitment in advancing nutrition improvement across the country through the annual conduct of the Nutrition Month campaign. Starting this year, Nutrition Month campaigns will carry the overarching theme "Sa PPAN: Sama-sama sa Nutrisyong Sapat Para sa Lahat!" for continuous advocacy in implementing the PPAN 2023-2028. A subtheme will be identified to highlight a key pillar of the PPAN, thus, for this yearโ€™s subtheme is "Food at Nutrition Security, Maging Priority! Sapat na Pagkain, Karapatan Natin!". With the approval of the NNC Technical Committee, the subtheme puts a spotlight on the importance of healthy diets as a pillar of nutrition security and emphasize that access to nutritious food is a fundamental human right and should be prioritized in national and local development agendas. By strengthening food and nutrition security initiatives, the campaign supports the PPANโ€™s goal of reducing all forms of malnutrition and hunger rates in the coming years. The Philippine Development Plan (PDP) 2023-2028 also identified food and nutrition security as a national priority, emphasizing the need for policies and programs that address hunger and promote sustainable food systems.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) 2024 report revealed that about 51 million Filipinos experienced moderate or severe food insecurity between 2021 and 2023. This was also reflected in the Social Weather Stations survey in December 2024, where it is reported that 25.9% of Filipino families experienced involuntary hunger. The result of the 2023 Expanded National Nutrition Survey further affirmed the need for action to address food insecurity; 31.1% of Filipinos are considered moderately to severely food insecure, while 2.7% are considered severely food insecure. Factors such as poverty, limited agricultural productivity, and climate change significantly contribute to food shortages and malnutrition.

For the Nutrition Month campaign to reach as many audiences as possible, partners are encouraged to use the SAPAT strategies:

Strengthen policies and programs for food and nutrition security to address food affordability, availability, and accessibility challenges.

Amplify public awareness and support for food and nutrition security through information drives, media campaigns, nutrition education, and community forums.

Practice and promote sustainable and climate-resilient food systems for long-term food security.

Activate and sustain multi-sectoral partnerships to address food and nutrition security challenges effectively.

Transform food systems.

By implementing the SAPAT strategy, the 51st Nutrition Month campaign will pave the way to building a healthier, more resilient society where access to adequate and nutritious food is not just an aspiration but a guaranteed right for all.

1st Quarter Provincial Nutrition Committee Meeting

Nutrition plays a fundamental role in the health and well-being of any community, and ensuring access to proper nutrition. The challenges of malnutrition, undernutrition, and related health issues have long been a concern. However, with the active involvement of Local Government Units of Davao del Norte these challenges are not insurmountable.
The Provincial Nutrition Committee had their 1st quarter meeting at Heroben Hometel, Tagum City together with the National Nutrition Council XI last January 28, 2025. This meeting discusses progress, challenges, and solutions, and the support of LGUs to the long-term success of these initiatives.

At the 1st Quarter Provincial Nutrition Committee Meeting, the National Nutrition Council XI, LGU Nutrition partners and Provincial Nutrition Committee of Davao del Norte gathered to discuss the progress and challenges related to nutrition in the province. A significant highlight of the meeting was the update provided by Ms. Retsebeth Laquihon, RND, MPD, MDM, the Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator. Her comprehensive presentation on regional nutrition updates underscored the ongoing efforts to improve community health and address emerging challenges in the fight against malnutrition and undernutrition.

Agenda for discussion was also presented and discussed by Ms. Sunshine Angelie S. Bantilan, RND. The Davao del Norte Nutrition Management System was also discussed by Mr. Bryan Garces, Computer Programmer of PHO. It was ended with a closing remarks by Ms. Neidel Feah A. Ferido, RM, BSM, designate Nutrition focal of Davao del Norte.

The meeting served as a vital reminder that achieving long-term improvements in nutrition requires not just individual efforts, but a united, collective approach. With the support of LGUs, and provincial nutrition partners , the province is poised to make continued progress toward addressing malnutrition and achieving sustainable health improvements for all.

2024 PROVINCIAL NUTRITION CONGRESS
December 10, 2024

The theme of this congressโ€”"Pagpanguna sa Nutrition alang sa Tanan"โ€”is a call to action. It is a reminder that nutrition is not a privilege but a right.

Ensuring nutrition for all is a complex and challenging goal. It demands a comprehensive approachโ€”one that unites various sectors and organizations, harnessing the collective expertise and resources of governments, NGOs, the private sector, and local communities.

Let us not forgetโ€”spearheading nutrition for all goes beyond just providing food. It means creating an environment where nutrition is prioritized in all aspects of lifeโ€”where health is valued as an essential component of societal well-being.

On behalf of the Provincial Health Office in partnership with the Provincial Nutrition Committee and all those who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes, we want to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for your participation and support in making the Provincial Nutrition Congress 2024 a resounding success.

This event would not have been achievable without the hard work and dedication of the unsung heroes, the BNS and all nutrition partners and as well as the valuable contributions of our respected speakers Mayflor Peralta Espiritu, and the support of our Provincial health Officer II, Doctor Alfredo A. Lacerona.
We would also like to thank Kuya Gob Edwin I. Jubahib, for his generosity and commitment sa โ€˜Pagpanguna sa Nutrisyon alang sa Tananโ€™
Your involvement has not only enriched this congress but has also set the stage for long-term, meaningful change in the way we approach nutrition in our communities.

Pursuant to Presidential Decree No. 491 or the Nutrition Act of the Philippines, idinedeklarang Nutrition Month ang Hulyo taon-taon simula pa noong taong 1974.
