SMOKING AND VA**NG CAN WORSEN CATARACTS

A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of your eye, the clear part of the eye that helps to focus light. Common cataract symptoms include blurred vision; seeing double or a ghosted image; increased sensitivity to light (especially with oncoming headlights at night); difficulty seeing well at night, or needing more light when you read; and seeing bright colors as faded or yellow instead.

Aging is the most common cause of cataracts. Normal eye changes begin after age 40 wherein proteins in the lens start to break down, causing the lens to get cloudy. People over age 60 usually start to have some clouding of their lenses. Smoking increases your risk of developing cataracts.

Talk to your eye doctor for more information.

PREVENT SORE EYES THIS DRY SEASON

The Department of Health (DOH) has warned the public about sore eyes, one of the common ailments during the dry months of summer. Here are some steps you can take to prevent sore eyes:

✅ Minimize exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during midday, to reduce the risk of contracting sore eyes and other seasonal illnesses.
Wear eyeglasses or sunglasses on windy days to protect your eyes from foreign particles.
✅ Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water. Minimize hand-to-eye contact.
✅ Use your own towels, eyedrops, makeup and sunglasses.
✅ Disinfect surfaces, doorknobs, counters, elevator buttons, and handrails with dilute bleach solution.
✅ Avoid crowded places.
✅ Wash clothes, towels, pillowcases, and anything else which may have come in contact with a person with sore eyes.

Talk to your ophthalmologist for more information about sore eyes prevention.
