Diabetes is considered as one of the leading causes of deaths not just in the Philippines, but also in the world. Here enters the situation where if diabetes is considered as a contagious disease, the government would definitely declare our nation in the epidemic state. But, what is the reason behind the rise of diabetes cases in the Philippines? Is it because Filipinos entertain too much sugary food and drinks? Or is it because Filipinos tend to skip exercise on a daily basis? What could be its leading cause?
According to the International Diabetes Federation, 387 million diabetes cases can be found in the world. Out of the million cases, 3.2 million diabetes cases were found in the Philippines. In 2014, prevalence of diabetes cases comprised of aged 20 to 79 years old male and female Filipino adults.
The numbers are alarming, but what’s more frightening is that diabetes is also the leading cause of blindness and kidney failure among adults. In addition, from the mild to severe nerve damage added with poor blood circulation, a simple cut may lead to amputation. Diabetes also increases the risk of a person acquiring heart failure. To sum it up, 53,549 Filipino adults’ cause of death is due to diabetes. According to World Health Organization (WHO), in the year 2030, it is projected that from the 3.2 million cases, it will rise to 7.7 million diabetes cases.
A lifestyle change can definitely prevent one to develop diabetes. A healthy lifestyle and a proper diet can also lessen the risk of a person to develop other side effects of diabetes such as heart disease and cancer.
