Cases of poisoning particularly those involving drugs, pesticides, and foodborne illnesses are a significant public health concern. While fatalities from unintentional poisoning are relatively low (around 0.200 per 100,000 people), vulnerable groups like children and those in industrial zones are at higher risk.

Cebu South Medical Center Nursing Service is holding a vital training session today, June 23, 2025, in the Conference Room, 6th Floor, Building B. This cascading activity is part of our commitment to empowering our nursing workforce.

This full-day session will give our nurses the critical skills to provide top-notch care. Gaining basic knowledge in recognizing toxidromes, implementing effective nursing interventions, and supporting crucial medical management & treatment efforts.

Exciting news! ICN releases a new, comprehensive definition of a Nurse and Nursing, providing an authoritative articulation of the profession’s scope, identity and contribution to global health.

DEFINITION OF 'A NURSE'
A nurse is a professional who is educated in the scientific knowledge, skills and philosophy of nursing, and regulated to practice nursing based on established standards of practice and ethical codes. Nurses enhance health literacy, promote health, prevent illness, protect patient safety, alleviate suffering, facilitate recovery and adaptation, and uphold dignity throughout life and at end of life. They work autonomously and collaboratively across settings to improve health, through advocacy, evidence-informed decision-making, and culturally safe, therapeutic relationships. Nurses provide people-centred, compassionate clinical and social care, manage services, enhance health systems, advance public and population health, and foster safe and sustainable environments. Nurses lead, educate, research, advocate, innovate and shape policy to improve health outcomes.

Further, nurses play a unique role in health and care for populations of all ages, and in all settings, building trust with individuals, families and communities and gaining valuable insights into people's experiences of health and illness.

Building on a foundation of personalized direct and social care, nurses advance their capabilities through ongoing education, research and exploration of best practices.

A nurse's scope of practice is defined by their level of education, experience, competency, professional standards and lawful authority. They play a key role in the coordination, supervision of, and delegation to others who may assist in the provision of health care.
Often at the front line, they respond to disasters, conflicts and emergencies, demonstrating courage, dedication, adaptability and commitment to the health of individuals, communities and the environment.

DEFINITION OF 'NURSING'
Nursing is a profession dedicated to upholding everyone's right to enjoy the highest attainable standard of health, through a shared commitment to providing collaborative, culturally safe, people-centred care and services. Nursing acts and advocates for people's equitable access to health and health care, and safe, sustainable environments.

The practice of nursing embodies the philosophy and values of the profession in providing professional care in the most personal health-related aspects of people's lives. Nursing promotes health, protects safety and continuity in care, and manages and leads health care organizations and systems. Nursing's practice is underpinned by a unique combination of science-based disciplinary knowledge, technical capability, ethical standards, and therapeutic relationships. Nursing is committed to compassion, social justice and a better future for humanity.

In light of the growing complexity of patient care and the increasing acuity in tertiary healthcare settings, the Cebu South Medical Center Nursing Service is proud to launch a specialized learning initiative for our nursing professionals:

“The Art & Science of Differential Diagnosis in Nursing: Identifying the Right Fit.”

Happening on March 24–25, 2025, this two-day program is designed to elevate nurses’ critical thinking, clinical judgment, and diagnostic reasoning. Moving beyond routine assessments, participants will gain the skills necessary to recognize complex clinical presentations, anticipate complications, and support accurate, timely diagnoses.

This interactive and immersive learning experience will empower CSMC Nurses to:
• Detect subtle diagnostic cues
• Distinguish between overlapping clinical conditions
• Enhance interprofessional collaboration for optimal patient outcomes

We are pleased to announce that this program is accredited by the CPD Council for Nursing, with 7 Credit Units under Accreditation No. NRS-2021-235-8623.

GERIATRIC ASSESSMENT TRAINING: Enhancing Nursing Competency in Older Adults

As global populations continue to age, the demand for comprehensive geriatric care is steadily increasing. In any healthcare facility, nurses play a crucial role in assessing older patients to ensure appropriate management of their complex health needs. The Minimum Geriatric Screening (MGS), which includes the AD8 Dementia Screening Interview, provides a structured framework for evaluating key aspects of geriatric health, such as functional status, cognitive abilities, emotional well-being, nutritional status, and risk factors for adverse outcomes.

To strengthen nurses’ competencies in conducting thorough geriatric assessments, the Nursing Service, in collaboration with the Medical Service and PETRO, organized a training program titled “GERIATRIC ASSESSMENT: Using the Minimum Geriatric Screening (MGS) with the AD8 Dementia Screening Interview.” This event took place on February 24, 2025, and was facilitated by Dr. Carla Mae O. Cinco-Gialogo, FPCP, a Geriatrician by specialty.

The program featured both a lecture and a hands-on workshop to ensure a comprehensive learning experience. The lecture covered the principles and components of geriatric assessment, the importance of standardized screening tools, and best practices for conducting thorough evaluations. The workshop provided an interactive, practical approach through case scenarios, role-playing, and group discussions, enabling participants to apply their knowledge in a structured, supportive environment.

Through this training, nurses are equipped to proficiently conduct geriatric assessments using the Minimum Geriatric Screening (MGS) and the AD8 Dementia Screening Interview. Participants also gained skills to accurately document findings and implement appropriate interventions, ultimately enhancing patient care and improving clinical outcomes.
