Aid reached 71 families, or 285 individuals, after Typhoon Tino inundated the riverside community and pushed residents into evacuation centers under the Technological University of the Philippines Visayas University Student Government (TUPV USG) Amliganayโs Project Ulikid in Hda. Malaga, Brgy. Robles, La Castellana, Nov. 21.
Many households fled with nothing as floods swept through the hacienda community, prompting the distribution of relief packs containing drinking water, food, detergent, and clothing.
More so, University Physician Dr. Justine Mary Golingay, alongside the TUPV College Red Cross Youth (CRCY) Council, assessed the evacueesโ health conditions and facilitated psychosocial activities for both parents and children, while the 829th Naval Reserve-Officers' Training Corps Unit (NROTCU) aided in distribution.
Camp Manager Eden Joy Mialen, who oversees evacuees at Velez Malaga Elementary School, said the psychosocial sessions offered a rare breather for families who had endured the sudden evacuation.
โKanami bala kay biskan sa kalip-ot lang daw nadula sa ila ang trauma bala nga natabo. Naka enjoy gid sila, nakakadlaw gid sila,โ she said.
Mialen further described the hacienda as located in a far-flung interior section of the barangay, making it less accessible to aid teams.
โDako gid ang pasalamat namon kay nadumduman gid nga diri gali may dako gid nga bululigan kag may nagahulat nga buligan,โ she added.
Recognizing the communityโs isolation and vulnerability, the TUPV USG Amliganay focused relief efforts on La Castellana, a hard-hit riverside barangay, coordinating with the local Sangguniang Kabataan chairman Curhin Dela Paz to reach families in need.
โAng amon target for this Project Ulikid is ang La Castellana lang, but if in the future nga magdako ang ma-accumulate nga donations, weโll target multiple cities and barangays man so that we can extend help to multiple people man,โ said USG Vice President Internal Ely John Punzalan.
Meanwhile, evacuee and senior citizen Josephine Esconde continued to call for relief from daily necessities such as rice, meat, fish, and clothes to long-term relocation solution.
