How High Blood Pressure Affects Your Eyes!!!
By Dr. Christian (OD)

High blood pressure doesn't just affect your heart—it can seriously damage your vision too. Here's how:

The Main Eye Problems

Hypertensive Retinopathy
When blood pressure stays high, it damages the tiny blood vessels in your retina (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye). These damaged vessels can leak blood and fluid, causing vision problems.

Hypertensive Chorioretinopathy
This more severe form occurs when high blood pressure damages deeper blood vessels under the retina. It can cause serious vision loss if not treated quickly.

Specific Eye Complications

Retinal Vein Occlusion
High blood pressure can cause blood clots that block retinal veins. When this happens, blood and fluid back up, leading to sudden vision loss, eye pain, and swelling.

Retinal Artery Occlusion
Similar to a stroke in the eye, this occurs when high blood pressure causes blockages in retinal arteries. It can result in sudden, severe vision loss that may be permanent.

Glaucoma
High blood pressure is a significant risk factor for glaucoma, which damages the optic nerve through increased eye pressure. This can lead to gradual, irreversible vision loss.

Hypertensive Optic Neuropathy
When blood pressure gets extremely high, it can reduce blood flow to the optic nerve, causing swelling and potential vision loss.

Regular eye exams are crucial if you have high blood pressure. Many of these conditions can be prevented or treated effectively when caught early, but some can cause permanent vision loss if left untreated. Managing your blood pressure is one of the best ways to protect your eyesight.

Itchy eyes and blurry vision in the morning could be due to mites p**ping on your eye lashes.

If your eyes itch and feel irritated every morning but allergy meds don’t help, tiny creatures called Demodex mites could be the cause. These microscopic spider-like mites live at the base of your eyelashes, feeding on oily secretions and leaving behind debris as they p**p while you sleep.

Around 60% of people carry these mites, which become more active at night, explaining why symptoms flare up in the morning. Signs include waxy buildup on lashes, blurry vision that comes and goes, itching, frequent styes, or dry, gritty eyes—sometimes leading to inflammation called Demodex blepharitis.

People over 60, contact lens wearers, and those with conditions like rosacea or diabetes are more prone. Eye doctors can detect mites and treat them with medicated wipes or prescriptions. To avoid mite buildup, keep eyelids clean, remove makeup nightly, swap pillowcases often, and never sleep with contacts in. So if your morning itch won’t quit, it might be time to check for mites, not just allergies.
