“Seven years na akong may HIV—and I’m fine.”

When Joy first learned about her status, hindi siya makapaniwala. She wasn't sexually active, focused on work, and lived far from her hometown in Batangas. Symptoms like fatigue, diarrhea, and irritability ang eventually nag-push sa kanya magpa-test. That test changed everything.

“Hirap akong tanggapin sa una. Sabi ko nga, kung kailan ako naging matino, saka pa ako nagka-HIV.”

Sa kabila ng gulat, she was one of the lucky ones—her siblings and workplace were supportive. Hindi siya humarap sa diskriminasyon. Her company stood by her, gave her time to recover, and encouraged treatment. But alam niya na hindi lahat ay fortunate.

She now advocates for awareness in schools and barangays, at tumutulong na maintindihan ng iba that HIV is not a death sentence. Thanks to treatment, she only takes one pill a day—a huge leap from the 8–16 pills people with HIV used to take.

“Sana mas maaga pa lang, mabuksan na ang usaping HIV. Para habang bata pa, habang nag aaral pa, alam na kung papaano mapo-protektahan ang ating sarili."

Her message is clear: Mahalaga ang edukasyon. Mahalaga ang suporta. At higit sa lahat, mahalin natin ang sarili natin.
