🚨 RABIES KILLS — BUT DELAY IS WHAT MAKES IT DEADLY

As a healthcare worker, let me say this clearly:
Rabies is 100% preventable… but once symptoms appear, it is almost always 100% fatal.
💔 Every year, lives are lost because of delay, lack of awareness, or ignoring small bites or scratches.
I have seen how one small bite… one ignored scratch… can turn into a tragedy.

⁉️ Have you ever been scratched by a dog or cat and thought…
“Okay lang yan, maliit lang naman.”

⚠️ Rabies doesn’t care if you’re young, healthy, or strong.
It only needs one bite… one scratch… one delay.
⚠️ Rabies does not “wait and see.”
It silently travels through the nerves to the brain.
⚠️ That “small” scratch could cost a life if not treated properly.

🦠 FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW:
❗ Rabies is caused by a virus from infected animals (usually dogs, cats, bats)
❗ It spreads through saliva (bite, scratch, even lick on an open wound)

🐾 RABIES INCUBATION PERIOD
(THIS IS WHY PEOPLE DELAY)
⏳ Rabies has an incubation period of usually 1–3 months (sometimes days… sometimes even years).
👉 This means you may feel completely fine at first after a bite or scratch.
⚠️ But while you feel “okay”… the virus is already moving quietly toward the brain.
⚠️ Once symptoms start → it is almost always too late.

🐾 WHAT YOU MUST DO IMMEDIATELY📣📣
1️⃣ Wash the wound with soap and running water for 15–20 minutes
2️⃣ Do NOT cover or ignore the wound; apply antiseptic if available
3️⃣ Go to the nearest hospital or Animal Bite Treatment Center IMMEDIATELY (Tinoc District Hospital Animal Bite Treatment Center - TDH ABTC)
4️⃣ Get anti-rabies vaccine (and immunoglobulin if needed)
5️⃣ Complete ALL vaccine doses (hindi pwedeng half sessions lang!)

📌 DO NOT WAIT FOR SYMPTOMS ⏳
By the time signs appear (fever, fear of water, agitation)… it may already be too late.

📌 Protect your family 👨‍👩‍👧 :
✔️ Vaccinate your pets regularly
✔️ Avoid handling unknown or stray animals
✔️ Teach children not to play with stray or unfamiliar pets

📌 FOR PARENTS 👶 (VERY IMPORTANT):
Children often don’t report bites out of fear.
Check their skin. Ask them daily. Stay alert.

📌 FOR PET OWNERS 🐕:
✔️ Vaccinate your dogs and cats yearly
✔️ Keep them monitored
✔️ A “healthy-looking” pet can still carry rabies

💔 The truth behind high MORTALITY RATES:
Most rabies deaths are preventable.
What kills is not the virus alone…
👉 It’s delay, denial, and “akala ko okay lang.”
🙏 Let’s be responsible. Let’s be informed. Let’s save lives.

STUDY OR RESEARCH THAT TANDOK IS NOT EFFECTIVE

Scientific research and public health authorities strongly advise against using tandok (a traditional method involving animal horns for sucking out venom/saliva from animal bites) for rabies, as it is considered ineffective and dangerous. Multiple studies have confirmed that tandok does not eliminate the rabies virus, which travels through nerves, not blood, and can actually push the virus deeper into the body while causing infections from open wounds.

Here are key findings from research and health reports regarding tandok:
👌No Evidence of Efficacy: A literature review published in the PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases journal in 2022 examined various traditional remedies, including tandok, and found no published scientific studies supporting their effectiveness in preventing or treating rabies

👌Misleading Success Rates: While users of tandok may believe the method works, research indicates that if a patient survives, it is likely because the biting animal was not rabid in the first place, or the bite was not high-risk, not because of the treatment itself.

👌Danger of Infection and Delay: The Philippine Department of Health (DOH) warns that tandok is unsafe, as it creates open wounds that can lead to tetanus, damages tissue, and delays proper medical treatment, such as rabies vaccination, which is necessary to prevent the disease.

👌Influence of Tradition: Research, such as studies on Marinduquenos' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP), shows that tandok is still practiced due to financial constraints, fear of vaccines, and cultural belief in its efficacy, despite lack of scientific backing.

👌Rabies is Fatal: Once symptoms appear, rabies is nearly 100% fatal, making it critical to use proven post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) rather than traditional methods.

💉Recommended Action: Immediately wash the wound with soap and water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical care at an accredited Animal Bite Treatment Center (ABTC) for proper, proven, and safe treatment.

‼️ PAUNAWA‼️

Obserbahan ang a*o o pusang kumagat.
